Angra 3 resumes in 2020
work on Angra 3 returns in 2020

Inter-ministerial committee started work today (12/08) to define the partnership model for Angra 3 and prepare the bidding notice

On the list of government priority projects, the Angra 3 nuclear power plant had this Monday (12/08), in Brasilia, the first meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee that will define the partnership model for the resumption of the works and prepare the notice of the international competition that will select the partner to complete the project.
The commission's work is expected to last 180 days, a period that can be extended for the same period, but even so, the Ministry of Mines and Energy maintains the forecast date for resumption of works for 2020.

After drawing up the partnership model, the documentation will be submitted to the CPPI (Investment Partnership Program Council) for approval, but it is already known that the government is looking for a private partner to complete the works.

Current stage of works

The work on Angra 3 began in the mid-80s, but was paralyzed in 2015, due to corruption allegations, with 67% of the civil works completed and the beginning of electromechanical assembly.
According to data from the MME, the Angra 3 plant still requires investments of approximately R$ 15 billion to be completed, but another study says that if the Angra 3 plant is not built, government will have to bear costs of 10 billion reais.

The government estimates that R$ 3 billion have already been consumed in the work on Angra 5, and the plant is expected to start operating in January 2026.

Taking advantage of his trip to China, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, met this Monday (12/08) with representatives of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), a nuclear power generation company, in Beijing.
It is worth remembering that the Chinese group is one of the main stakeholders in the international competition of Electronuclear for the completion of works on Angra 3.

The minister will also speak in China with representatives of the National Energy Administration (NEA), the intention being future partnerships in the energy area.
