Interministerial Committee Started Working Today (08/12) to Define the Partnership Model for Angra 3 and Prepare the Bidding Notice

On the Government’s List of Priority Projects, the Angra 3 nuclear plant had its first meeting of the Interministerial Committee today (08/12) in Brasília, which will define the partnership model for resuming the works and prepare the international bidding notice to select the partner to complete the project.
The committee’s work is expected to last 180 days, a deadline that can be extended for the same period, yet the Ministry of Mines and Energy maintains the projected date for resuming the works for 2020.

After the partnership model is developed, the documentation will be submitted to the CPPI (Investment Partnership Program Council) for approval, but it is already known that the government is looking for a private partner to complete the works.

Current Stage of the Works

The works on Angra 3 began in the mid-1980s but were halted in 2015 due to corruption allegations, with 67% of the civil works completed and at the beginning of the electromechanical assembly.
According to data from the MME, the Angra 3 plant still requires investments of approximately R$ 15 billion to be completed, but another study indicates that if the Angra 3 plant is not built, the government will have to bear costs of 10 billion reais.

The government estimates that about R$ 5 billion have already been spent on the Angra 3 works, and the expected operational date for the plant is January 2026.

Taking advantage of the trip to China, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, met on Monday (08/12) with representatives of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), a nuclear energy generation company, in Beijing.
It is worth noting that the Chinese group is one of the main interested parties in the international bidding by Eletronuclear for the completion of the Angra 3 works.

The minister will also discuss future energy partnerships in China with representatives from the National Energy Administration (NEA).
