The Indications of Oil and Natural Gas Reserves in Roraima May Attract Strong Investments for the Local Energy Sector. The ANP Should Therefore Include About 2 Blocks from the Tacutu Basin in the National Permanent Offering Auction.
For this Monday, (12/05), the National Agency of Petroleum and Biofuels (ANP) is planning to include about 2 exploration blocks from the Tacutu Basin in the national permanent offering auction. The main objective is to include the region of Roraima in the National Interconnected System (SIN) and expand investments in the energy sector. This is because there are indications of oil and natural gas reserves in the basin region, according to recent studies.
Inclusion of Blocks from the Tacutu Basin in the ANP Permanent Offering Auction May Attract Strong Investments for the State’s Energy Market
The ANP is planning to encourage investments in the oil and natural gas segment in the North of the country and intends to include 12 exploration blocks from the region in the permanent concession offering auction.
Of these 12 blocks, 2 will be from the Tacutu Basin area in Roraima, aiming to contribute to investments in the region’s energy segment.

There are studies indicating signs of oil and natural gas reserves in this area. These studies indicate that there is a clear geological separation between the oil basins of Venezuela and the Tacutu Basin, which encompasses parts of Roraima and Guyana.
During the 1970s, Petrobras drilled three wells in the Serra do Tucano region, municipality of Bonfim, finding good indications of natural gas.
However, the company withdrew the rigs and did not continue with the fuel exploration plan in the region.
In neighboring Guyana, oil and gas were discovered by the Canadian company Homeoil more than 20 years ago, having installed in the locality of Miritizeiro, a few kilometers from Roraima, a “Christmas tree” device ready to flow production.
Thus, the indications of oil and natural gas in the Tacutu Basin blocks are back on the agenda at the ANP, which intends to use the permanent auction to expand investments in the region.
Roraima May Be Included in the SIN and Achieve Good Investments in the Energy Segment with the Inclusion of the Tacutu Basin Blocks in the Concession Auction
According to the ANP, preliminary studies indicate the possibility of oil and natural gas discoveries in the region, which could encourage energy production by thermoelectric plants.
Currently, the state of Roraima is the only one not participating in the SIN, resulting in significant losses for the electric energy segment in the region.
In 2013, researchers from the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR) found black shales in the sedimentary basin of the Tacutu River, and this material is a strong indication of a petroleum reservoir in the region.
Research was conducted in the following years, confirming strong evidence of the existence of oil and natural gas reserves in the Tacutu Basin region.
In 2020, a study conducted by the Federal University of Roraima regarding the possibility of oil and natural gas in the geological basin of the Tacutu River was accredited by the ANP.
Thus, all research has been directed towards attracting investments in the energy sector in the region of Roraima.
Now, the state awaits the ANP’s decision regarding the inclusion of the blocks in the permanent concession auction, seeking to expand the state’s presence in the national market.
