The Japanese automaker’s factory was inaugurated in 1962, 60 years ago, being the first factory of the automaker outside Japan. At the beginning of its journey, the unit was used for the production of the off-road model Bandeirantes, but currently, it is only used for the production of components for the Hilux, the Corolla, and other models that have already been discontinued in Brazil.

The current 550 employees of the São Bernardo do Campo (SP) factory will be transferred to other units in the state and there will be no layoffs. In a statement, the Japanese automaker informed that the closure of the unit is part of the company’s plan to increase its competitiveness in the national market. With the closure of the São Bernardo do Campo unit, the company will only have three units in the country (Porto Feliz, Indaiatuba, and Sorocaba).

It is important to note that components produced in the closed factory will also be transferred to other Brazilian units and to factories in the United States and Argentina. Furthermore, the company recently announced an investment of 50 million reais in Indaiatuba, also in the state of São Paulo, to modernize the Corolla line.

Toyota Helped Volkswagen With Painting Beetles

A fire at the Volkswagen factory in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) changed the course of the Japanese company in Brazil, as it was one of the companies that helped the German automaker cope with the loss of its painting section.

Applying primer to 20 Beetle bodies per day made the Brazilian operation quite profitable and went far beyond that, as it gave a lifeline to the factory that was on the verge of closing. Despite the factory’s capacity, at its inauguration, to produce 300 Bandeirantes per month, only 627 were assembled in the first year, reaching a peak of 2,200 cars in 1964.

However, the average in the following years was discouraging, not exceeding 700 cars per year. The painting service for Volkswagen may have prevented the Japanese company from ending production of the Bandeirantes in Brazil as early as the 1970s but did not prevent Toyota from delaying vehicle production in Brazil until the 1990s, with the Corolla.

Learn About The Toyota Factory In Brazil

The Toyota factory was inaugurated in 1962, being the first of the company in the country, and has great importance for the automaker as it marked the beginning of its industrial expansion.

At that time, the automaker decided it would manufacture the Land Cruiser, which became popularly known throughout Brazil as Bandeirantes. For many years, this was the only model produced by Toyota nationally until, in the 1990s, the company decided to build a new factory and start producing the Corolla in the country.
