New Change Before the Generation Swap of the Audi A4 and A5 Models: An Excitement for Lovers of All-Wheel Drive Cars!
This year, Audi is about to revamp its medium car lineup in Europe, with the current generations of the A4 and A5, launched between 2015 and 2016, being replaced. Until then, the A4 will temporarily exit the scene, making way for the next generation of the A5, which will come in Sportback and Avant versions, still with combustion engines, whether mild hybrids or plug-in, directly competing with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, according to motor1.
By around 2026 or 2027, the A4 name is expected to return as a fully electric model, using the new PPE (Premium Platform Electric) developed by Audi in collaboration with Porsche. Meanwhile, Brazil celebrates the return of the all-wheel drive versions of the A4 sedan and A5 Sportback.
The Return of All-Wheel Drive
Until 2021, the Audi A4 and A5 were offered in Brazil with 2.0 turbo engines of 190 hp, with front-wheel drive, or 252 hp, with quattro drive. However, all-wheel drive versions were discontinued due to new environmental regulations under the Vehicle Air Pollution Control Program. Now, the brand has decided that all its models in Brazil, except the A3, will be sold exclusively with all-wheel drive. Thus, the new versions of the A4 and A5 Sportback come with quattro transmission and 204 hp engines.

The S-line version, for R$ 360,000, includes three-zone climate control, sports seats with memory electric adjustment, aluminum trims, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and a standard sunroof.
The Audi A5 Sportback is also offered in two versions. The Advanced, starting at R$ 360,000, comes with a sunroof, three-zone climate control, electric adjustment for the front seats, ACC, full LED Matrix headlights, and 19-inch wheels. The top-of-the-line S-line version, for R$ 395,000, brings 20-inch wheels, a black headliner, seat memory, and other premium details. Both models offer optional packages, such as the Black package and Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Design and Performance
Despite the different names, the A4 and A5 Sportback are essentially the same car, differing only in body style: the A4 is a classic sedan, while the A5 Sportback features a liftback design with expanded access to the luggage compartment. Both share the same wheelbase of 2.82 m and overall length, with the A4 being slightly longer by 5 millimeters.
The A5 trunk offers 465 liters of space, compared to 460 liters in the A4. All-wheel drive adds 55 kilograms to the weight of both models, resulting in 1,685 kg for the A5 and 1,645 kg for the A4. They promise a consumption of about 10.5 km/l in the city and 12.5 km/l on the highway, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 6.7 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h.
History of All-Wheel Drive in Audi
From the first Audi in 1910 with rear-wheel drive to the introduction of all-wheel drive in the 1980s, the brand has evolved significantly. It was in 1980 that Audi launched the iconic Audi Quattro, revolutionizing the world of rallying and shaping the brand’s identity. Today, the term “quattro” designates various all-wheel drive systems, including Torsen, Haldex, Ultra, and those used in electric models.
All-wheel drive systems provide enhanced performance and greater control in different road conditions, whether dry, wet, or snow-covered. In Brazil, the introduction of all-wheel drive in the A4 and A5 promises safer and more efficient driving, especially on challenging roads.

First Impressions on the Road
During a presentation event at Goodyear’s testing field in Americana (SP), we had the opportunity to test the new Audi A4 and A5 Sportback with the quattro Ultra system. The sense of safety provided by all-wheel drive is remarkable, even knowing that, under normal conditions, the system only activates the rear axle about 10% to 15% of the total time.
Therefore, the rain on the day of the presentation helped to highlight the effectiveness of the system, especially in tight corners and strong accelerations. The driving experience of the A4 and A5 remains refined, with a perfect driving position and excellent grip steering wheels, providing an intimate connection. All-wheel drive enhances stability and performance, making the driving experience more engaging and safe.
In summary, the return of the Audi A4 and A5 with all-wheel drive to Brazil marks an exciting phase for the brand enthusiasts. Combining performance, technology, and safety in an attractive and modern package.
