After Investing R$ 1.6 Billion in an “Indestructible Bunker”, Mark Zuckerberg Minimizes the Construction, Calling It a Simple Cellar.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook and the third richest man in the world, dismissed speculation that he is building a “doomsday shelter” on his US$ 270 million property, about R$ 1.6 billion, on the island of Kauai in Hawaii.

Rumors of underground facilities on billionaire properties are not new. Reports indicate that names like Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates are also investing in similar structures to prepare for possible disasters.

However, Zuckerberg insists that the focus of his farm is on cattle and macadamia nut production, aiming to create top-quality beef.

In an interview with Bloomberg on December 19, the 40-year-old mogul stated that the underground space is merely a “small shelter“. “It’s like a cellar,” Zuckerberg told journalist Emily Chang.

The Controversy of Koolau Ranch

In 2022, the American press reported that Mark Zuckerberg was developing Koolau Ranch, a 570-acre complex that includes a 4,900-square-foot underground structure — approximately the size of a basketball court.

The property features more than 30 rooms and bathrooms, distributed across a main hall and various auxiliary buildings. According to local residents, the project has generated speculation about its true objectives.

The two main mansions on the ranch, which together occupy an area equivalent to a football field, will be connected by a tunnel leading to the underground shelter.

Small rope bridges also connect the other buildings, providing access to the 11 disk-shaped tree houses scattered throughout the site.

One of the buildings on the ranch will be equipped with a full gym, pools, saunas, hot tubs, and a tennis court.

The infrastructure will also include elevators, offices, and an industrial kitchen. Reports indicate that the project aims to be self-sufficient, with a pumping system and a water tank that is 52 feet in diameter and nearly 20 feet tall.

Details of the Alleged Shelter

According to unconfirmed reports, the underground shelter has an explosion-resistant door made of reinforced concrete. There are also common areas, a machinery room, and an escape hatch accessible via a staircase.

The location has around 20 security cameras installed in just one of the buildings on the property. The doors — including those of the library — are camouflaged to mimic the surrounding walls, ensuring discretion.

Planning documents indicate that the structures will be equipped with keypad-controlled and soundproof mechanisms.

Acquisition History

The expansion of Mark Zuckerberg’s property in Kauai occurred in three main phases. In 2014, he acquired 700 acres for over US$ 100 million.

Seven years later, he purchased another 600 acres for US$ 53 million, and in December 2021, he added 110 acres for US$ 17 million. These purchases solidified his position as one of the largest landowners in the region.

However, not everything has been welcomed with enthusiasm by local residents. In 2016, Allan Parachini, a Hawaiian journalist, criticized Zuckerberg for building a stone wall on his beachfront property.

The article described the attitude as an abuse of power, suggesting that the mogul treated the residents as “victims of Facebook.” The statement sparked controversy and intensified criticism regarding Zuckerberg’s influence in the area.

Local Production and Sustainability

Despite the controversies, Zuckerberg’s ranch is also a productive farm. In addition to cattle and horses, the property includes organic ginger and turmeric plantations.

Nurseries and nearby farms also help ensure food production for self-consumption.

Koolau Ranch also stands out for its integration with nature. Small innovations like tree houses and rope bridges reflect an effort to create a harmonious, albeit luxurious, environment. Nonetheless, speculation about the true purpose of the project continues to circulate.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Rejection of Rumors

Zuckerberg has repeatedly denied that his property is intended for apocalyptic preparations. In his words, the underground shelter is “just a small space.”

Despite this, the details of the project and the dimensions of the ranch challenge this narrative, fueling curiosity and controversy.

With a net worth estimated at US$ 215 billion, Mark Zuckerberg remains among the three richest men on the planet, alongside Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. His lifestyle and investment choices often spark debates about the disconnect between billionaires and the general population.

However, while rumors persist, the farm in Hawaii continues to be one of the most talked-about properties in the world, distinguished both by its luxury and the controversy surrounding it.
