Maersk Confirms Investments and Expects to Generate 1,600 Jobs at New Container and General Cargo Terminal in Area of Atlantic South Shipyard!
The Court of Ipojuca confirmed that APM Terminals, a company of the Maersk group, is the official winner of the judicial auction for the acquisition of a Isolated Productive Unit (UPI-B Cais Sul) from the Atlantic South Shipyard (EAS) at the Port of Suape, Pernambuco. APM Terminals presented the winning bid on July 26, 2022, for the acquisition of the area, in the context of its judicial recovery of EAS, to develop and operate a container and general cargo terminal.
“Suape has significant growth potential, and our vision is to invest in a terminal that will add growth opportunities for Northeast Brazil. We believe that more competition in the region will generate value for exporters/importers and attract new cargo flows, helping the Port of Suape to grow at a faster pace,” said Leo Huisman, Executive Director of APM Terminals for the Americas region.
Maersk Plans to Invest R$2.6 Billion and Create Nearly 2,000 Jobs!
APM Terminals plans to invest approximately R$2.6 billion in the new container terminal and begin operations with an initial capacity of 400,000 TEUs, adding 55% more capacity to the port complex. Once all regulatory approvals are obtained and the necessary licenses for the terminal’s construction are issued, APM Terminals plans to complete construction within 24 months and expects the terminal to be fully operational by the end of 2025, when the completion of the dredging of the access channel and the evolution basin at the Port of Suape is also expected.

Leonardo Levy, Expansion Director of APM Terminals for the Americas, hopes that “the market will benefit from this additional capacity, potentially transforming Suape into a hub for the Northeast, generating around 338 direct jobs and 1,300 indirect jobs, increasing competitiveness and potentially attracting new services from the Far East and Europe.”
Additionally, APM Terminals is also committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, and this will be considered in the design of the terminal.

Maersk Unveils Image of World’s First Fleet of Green Fuel Container Ships, Scheduled for Operation in Early 2024
The design of the world’s first carbon-neutral ship, scheduled to operate in 2024, was unveiled by Maersk. This is the first time the company has released an image of the project for a fleet comprising eight container ships powered by green fuel. “In designing them, our ambition was to ensure that the new ships could serve our customers more intelligently, while also contributing to their carbon-neutral transport goals,” the company emphasizes in a global statement.
The ships will measure 350 meters in length, 53.5 meters in width, and will be significantly different from what has been seen before for any larger container ships. The crew accommodation and bridge will be located at the bow to allow for increased container capacity. The funnel will be at the stern and only on one side of the vessel, providing more space for cargo. This separation between accommodation and funnel also improves efficiency in the port.
The series, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, features an innovative dual-fuel engine setup that can operate with methanol and conventional low-sulfur fuel. With fuel capacity, the vessels will be able to make a complete round trip, such as on the Asia-Europe route, using green methanol.
The first vessel is set to enter operation in early 2024. “We look forward to taking these vessels across the oceans of the world and continuing our work in creating new solutions to enhance the efficiency of our customers’ future supply chains,” says Maersk.
