Central Bank of Argentina Puts New Highest Denomination Bill into Circulation, Focusing on Simplifying Transactions in a High Inflation Context.
On Thursday (14), Argentina officially put into circulation the new 20,000 pesos bill, the highest denomination ever issued by the country. The launch, promoted by the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA), is part of a strategy to facilitate citizens’ daily lives amid the impact of rising inflation.
The new bill honors Juan Bautista Alberdi, an important figure in the country’s history, while the need for higher denominations in cash reflects the economic challenges faced by Argentina.
New 20,000 Pesos Bill in Argentina

The arrival of the new 20,000 pesos bill marks a new chapter for Argentina in its fight against uncontrolled inflation. Featuring the face of Juan Bautista Alberdi, one of the main architects of republican Argentina and the creator of the 1853 Constitution, the bill brings an important historical reference.

Many employers do not know, but the law guarantees domestic workers a 25% increase in salary during trips, 50% for overtime, 20% for night shifts, and 17 additional benefits that can lead to labor lawsuits if not paid.
On the back, the province of Tucumán, where Alberdi was born and where the country’s independence was declared in 1816, is highlighted. This design choice is part of the “Heroines and Heroes of the Homeland” series, launched by the Central Bank in 2022.
The bill also arrives equipped with advanced technologies to hinder counterfeiting, including holograms, a watermark featuring Alberdi’s portrait, color-changing ink, and microprinting, providing greater security in transactions.
Effects of Inflation
Since May, the BCRA had already attempted to mitigate the effects of inflation with a 10,000 pesos bill, but constant price increases made this denomination insufficient, making the new 20,000 pesos bill an urgent necessity. At the official exchange rate, the new note is equivalent to about R$ 116 or US$ 19.64.
The launch of this new bill is only part of President Javier Milei’s economic plan. Since taking office, Milei has sought strategies to control inflation, which has reached a level of 107% accumulated over the year.
Helped with Logistics
Despite a slight slowdown in October, when inflation fell to 2.7%, the scenario still requires measures to minimize the impact on prices and the pockets of Argentines.
In addition to helping simplify transactions, the new bill also alleviates the logistics of transporting cash for banks and businesses, which deal daily with large volumes of cash.
To ensure supply, the Central Bank has already distributed 230 million units of the new note and expects to launch an additional 540 million by mid-2025.
