Eneva Is Keeping an Eye on the Purchase of New Power Generation Plants and Opportunities Involving Petrobras Gas Assets in 2021

Petrobras assets and energy auctions that will be promoted by the Brazilian government are on Eneva’s investment radar for 2021. The Brazilian company operates in the sectors of generation, exploration, and production of oil and natural gas, as well as electricity commercialization. The company is interested in new power generation plants and opportunities involving Petrobras gas assets. The company will keep an eye on potential renewable business, mainly hydropower projects, said Marcelo Habibe, CFO of Eneva in an interview with Reuters.

Eneva is focusing on the energy auctions, especially the so-called A-5 and A-6 auctions, already scheduled for September next year, which will contract new plants for delivery in 2026 and 2027.

According to Habibe, in the medium term, the company will seek to explore its gas areas, including seven blocks acquired this month in the so-called permanent offer auction from ANP, where it won assets in the Amazon, Solimões, and Paraná basins.

The company’s plan is to replicate the business model used in the Parnaíba Basin, where it produces gas and supplies its own thermal power plants.

Eneva’s Investments in the Amazon and Petrobras Assets

In the Amazon, according to the executive, “It’s almost possible to create a new Eneva, making a rough calculation, just to have an idea of the magnitude.”

The company plans to start exploration work in blocks in the Amazon basin in mid-2021. More intensive activities in most other assets are expected later, likely in 2023 and 2024, while the Juruá block, in the Solimões Basin, is expected to be utilized “in the long run.”

Alongside this, Eneva is also keeping an eye on Petrobras’s divestment program, which has sought to focus its operations on oil production in deep and ultra-deep waters.

According to Habibe, the company has been monitoring the oil company’s movements and is waiting for the sales of gas exploration fields and thermal power plants. “It didn’t make sense in our business plan, but from the moment it starts putting assets that fit better into our plan for sale, we will take a look. Especially gas; we will certainly evaluate,” he said.

Eneva’s expansion plans also involve projects already in development, such as the Jaguatirica thermal plant, which is expected to begin operations around September 2021.
