Overture, The Revolutionary Supersonic Plane That Reaches 1,800 km/h and Transports 80 Passengers, May Conduct Test Flights Still in 2023.
The design of the supersonic plane Overture is advancing every day and the estimate is that the first flight will take place in 4 years; however, the manufacturer Boom Supersonic has other goals for that time: the company wants to conduct a test this year with a smaller model, but with the same capacity to exceed the speed of sound.
Experiment Will Be Conducted With Another Model of Supersonic Plane
The Overture experiment will be conducted with the XB-1, a test model that has space only for the pilot. The plane has been certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States and has undergone tests on the engine and fuel system.
A date for the supersonic plane’s flight has not yet been set; however, the takeoff is expected to take place from the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. The runway is famous for having been used in the first supersonic flight in history in 1947. The development of the XB-1 has enabled Boom Supersonic to acquire data that will aid in the production of the Overture, which has nearly three times the length of the test model.

The XB-1 also indicated how the company thinks about safety and helped develop a strong and rigorous safety culture at Boom. Supersonic Plane Overture Can Reach 1,800 km/h
The supersonic plane could become a successor to the Concorde, which flew for 27 years until it was retired in 2003. However, the new aircraft is not expected to transport passengers before 2029.
The technology and materials are advancing enough to develop faster and more efficient supersonic planes while caring for the planet. Furthermore, business and leisure travel continues to grow, and travelers are willing to pay for speed.
The Overture is expected to have double the speed of conventional aircraft, reaching 1,800 km/h when flying over the sea. In flights over land, the aircraft will have 20% greater performance, according to the manufacturer.
The duration of a flight from Miami to London, which currently takes approximately 10 hours, would drop to about 5 hours with the new model. And the high speed of the supersonic plane will not be uncomfortable for those inside the aircraft, as the company claims that the Overture will fly above most turbulence areas, making the flight smoother than current aircraft.
Overture Delivers Up to 7,867 km of Range
The company claims that the supersonic plane will not be as noisy for populated areas. Generally, this type of aircraft generates a loud boom when exceeding the speed of sound due to the so-called afterburn, which will not be used by the Overture.
The company also asserts that the plane will provide an elevated passenger experience. The model has the capacity to carry up to 80 passengers.
It measures 61 meters in length and 32 meters in width, with 130 units already ordered by American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines. The supersonic plane will be produced starting in 2025 at a factory that Boom Supersonic is developing at the North Carolina airport.
