The Windows 11 Update Will Eliminate Features and Applications You May Be Using. Learn Which Important Changes Are Coming and How This May Affect Your Experience with the Operating System.

Microsoft recently released the distribution version of the Windows 11 2024 Update (24H2), bringing the year’s major feature update for the operating system. However, with the new features, the Windows update also marks the end of some applications and features that many users have been accustomed to using.

This move is part of Microsoft’s ongoing strategy to modernize its system, but it may also leave many users missing some tools.

Applications and Features That Will No Longer Exist with the Windows Update

Windows Update

With the arrival of the update, a series of applications will be permanently removed from computers that upgrade to Windows 11 24H2. Among the main names disappearing are Windows Mixed Reality, Tips, and WordPad. Although these applications have alternatives, they have long been an integral part of the Windows experience.

For example, WordPad, the Windows rich text editor, offered a middle ground solution between the simple Notepad and the more robust Microsoft Word.

However, with the update, it will be permanently removed, and Microsoft recommends that users use Microsoft Word for .doc and .rtf documents, or Text Editor for simple files like .txt.

The end of Windows Mixed Reality also marks a significant change for those who invested in mixed reality.

Although Microsoft HoloLens was initially a promising device, its failure in the market, especially after the contract with the U.S. Army did not advance as expected, ultimately resulted in the discontinuation of the entire project.

If you use Windows Mixed Reality for Steam applications, it’s important to know that it will continue to function until November 2026, as long as you do not upgrade to Windows 11 24H2.

Tools That Made History

Another application that will be discontinued is Steps Recorder, used to record problems and create step-by-step tutorials in Windows. The tool, widely useful for troubleshooting and guiding users, will be replaced by the snipping tool, which allows for efficient screen capturing.

The end of Tips is also lamented by some users. This application provided tips on the news and changes in Windows, but with the arrival of Windows 11 24H2, it will be discontinued. Although Microsoft frequently presents new features, there is not always clear communication about what has changed, and Tips played a crucial role in that sense.

The scripting language VBScript, widely used in script automation, will also be removed, which may require developers and advanced users to seek alternatives.

Other Important Changes

In addition to the removed applications, there are other important changes to consider. If you are one of the few who adopted PCs with Arm processors and still use 32-bit applications, support for those applications will be discontinued.

The majority of Arm processors on the market today are 64-bit, but this change may impact the performance of some applications, especially on older devices.

Microsoft is also cleaning up applications that are no longer widely used, such as Mixed Reality Portal and Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR, mentioned earlier. Although these applications were initially seen as the future of interaction with Windows, they are being removed to make way for new technologies.

Time for Transition and Available Alternatives

The good news is that Microsoft is distributing this update gradually, which gives users some time to prepare for the changes. If you still rely on one of the applications that will be removed, now is the time to look for alternatives and make the transition.

For WordPad, for example, Microsoft Word is the most recommended option, although it is paid. For those seeking free alternatives, programs like LibreOffice Writer can be an interesting solution. For users of Steps Recorder, the integrated snipping tool in Windows can be a functional substitute, although it offers fewer recording options.

For users of Windows Mixed Reality, the recommendation is not to upgrade to Windows 11 24H2 if they want to continue using virtual reality applications until 2026.

Windows 11 24H2 represents a new phase for Microsoft’s operating system, but it also marks the end of an era for several applications and functionalities that have long been part of the user experience.
