There is a growing concern about the search for alternative energy sources, aiming to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and decrease the environmental impacts caused by the burning of gas. New technologies and strategies are being developed to make the use of gas more flexible and sustainable, seeking to meet the energy demands of the population in a more efficient and clean manner.

The combustion of gas molecules produces energy in a cleaner way than burning fossil fuels, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. It is essential to seek viable and sustainable alternatives for the use of gas as an energy source, aiming to mitigate environmental impacts and promote the development of a more diversified and environmentally responsible energy matrix.

Bahiagás Plans New Public Call for Natural Gas Acquisition in 2024

Bahiagás is preparing to launch a new public call for the acquisition of natural gas in 2024. The Bahia-based piped gas distributor has important supply contracts expiring at the end of next year and is seeking more flexible purchasing conditions for the molecule, aiming to renew its portfolio.

The Gas Supply and Market Manager at Bahiagás, Makyo Félix, revealed that in the public call process, the intention is to listen to companies to create products that offer flexibility and ensure an appropriate price signal. These statements were made during his participation in the Shell Energy Gas Forum.

According to the company’s forecast, the planning for the call will be completed by February, and a presentation round – a road show – will be held between March and April 2024, aiming to promote competition among potential suppliers and clients. Subsequently, the expectation is to launch the public call by the end of May and, by September or October, celebrate the new supply contracts.

Bahiagás is a reference in the opening of the gas market, as it is the piped gas distributor with the largest number of suppliers in the country. The company has two supply contracts expiring at the end of 2024, totaling around 900,000 m3/day of firm gas.

The Controversy Over Fossil Fuels at COP28

At COP28, a coalition of more than 80 countries, including the United States and Europeans, is pushing for an agreement that includes a phased elimination of fossil fuels, but is facing strong opposition led by OPEC and its allies. The president of COP28 and Adnoc’s CEO, Sultan al-Jaber, made an appeal for countries to reach an agreement before the end of the conference on Tuesday (12/12).

Venezuela and Guyana Meeting on the Essequibo Dispute

The presidents of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and Guyana, Irfaan Ali, will meet on Thursday (14/12) to discuss the dispute over Essequibo in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a Caribbean country. The meeting will be mediated by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and the Caribbean Community (Caricom).

Break at Braskem Mine

The Civil Defense of Maceió reported that part of Mine 18 of Braskem experienced a break at 1:15 PM, which was perceived in a section of the Mundaú Lagoon, in the Mutange neighborhood. The agency stated that the incident was localized and there is no risk of further breaks in the area, and that there were no casualties.

Expansion of the LNG Terminal at Suape Port

OnCorp plans to begin between February and March of next year the second phase of the revitalization project of the LNG Terminal at Suape Port, which will have a capacity of 11 million to 14 million m³/day of natural gas.

Climate Phenomenon El Niño and Concerns in the Electrical Sector

The lack of rainfall in the northern part of the country, affected by the climate phenomenon El Niño, may lead the National Electric System Operator (ONS) to adopt exceptional measures in 2024 to preserve the region’s reservoirs, according to the agency’s director-general, Luiz Carlos Ciocchi.
