Central Bank Closes Favorite Banks After Pix Attack That Diverted R$ 530 Million; Voluti, Brasil Cash, and S3 Bank Are Suspended.

The Brazilian financial system was shaken by a cyberattack that diverted an impressive R$ 530 million from reserve accounts held by financial institutions at the Central Bank. The criminals used Pix to carry out the transfers and quickly converted the amounts into cryptocurrencies, making tracking the money difficult. The incident exposed critical vulnerabilities in digital security and forced the regulator to take tough measures to preserve the integrity of the instant payment system.

Central Bank Suspends Favorite Pix Banks – Voluti, Brasil Cash, and S3 Bank

In response to the incident, the Central Bank announced the temporary suspension of three institutions that had been standing out as favorite banks for customers seeking digital solutions: Voluti Financial Management, Brasil Cash, and S3 Bank. The decision was based on Article 95-A of Resolution 30, which allows suspending any Pix participant whose conduct or failures pose a risk to the system.

This is not the first such move. Previously, other financial companies had also been suspended — notably Transfeera, Soffy, and Nuoro Pay. The measure demonstrates that, despite the popularity of digital banks and fintechs, the Central Bank’s oversight remains strict and does not hesitate to take down institutions that pose risks.

Reaction of Institutions and Stance Toward the Central Bank

Among the closed banks, Transfeera confirmed the interruption of Pix operations but emphasized that other services remain operational. The company stated it is collaborating with authorities and assured that customer data has not been compromised.

Brasil Cash, for its part, acknowledged being impacted by the larger scheme but reinforced transparency in its dialogue with the Central Bank, also highlighting that no sensitive customer data was leaked. The institution implemented operational adjustments, such as reviewing Pix transactions made during nighttime and on weekends, which are considered higher risk for attacks.

These reactions indicate an attempt by the companies to preserve their image in front of customers and authorities while seeking to restore the lost trust after the ban.

Security in Pix: How the Central Bank Regulates the System

Since its launch in 2020, Pix has revolutionized the way Brazilians make bank transfers, with instant transactions available 24 hours a day. However, the incident shows that the scalability of the tool also brings risks.

The Central Bank requires all participants to comply with strict security protocols, which include advanced encryption, two-factor authentication, and constant monitoring to identify suspicious activities. Despite this, the attack involving C&M Software — a provider of financial solutions — revealed weaknesses capable of compromising billions in seconds, reminding us that no system is completely immune.

Measures to Prevent New Attacks on Digital Banks

Given the severity of the case, the Central Bank and the involved banks are reviewing their security protocols. The focus is on enhancing cyber education within institutions, training employees to identify and mitigate risks. There is also a growing effort for cooperation among financial companies themselves, with rapid information sharing about emerging threats.

Additionally, providers like C&M Software are being pressured to strengthen their security infrastructures, with investments in proactive monitoring technologies and immediate incident response. The goal is to reduce response time to attacks and minimize potential financial losses.

Impact on Clients and the Image of Banks

The suspension of favorite banks among the public, especially fintechs that gained ground for their convenience and low fees, brings an alert to consumers. Although Pix remains secure under the oversight of the Central Bank, the blockage shows that trust in digital services directly depends on the robustness of the cybersecurity of participating institutions.

For clients, the main impact is the temporary limitation of services. For the market, the measure reinforces that the Brazilian monetary authority will not hesitate to shut down operations when the risk to the system is high.

And you, do you believe that the Central Bank‘s decision to suspend these closed banks will restore trust in Pix, or will it be necessary to tighten oversight on favorite digital banks even more?

Lembrando que nenhum sistema está totalmente imune, só as urnas eletrônicas.

Duvido…isso me parece mentira… nunca ouvi falar nesses bancos e é mais um discurso para meter a mão no dinheiro sem ser comprometido.
