BNDES Injects Record Funds and Accelerates Aid to Affected Producers
The BNDES released R$ 2.45 billion for producers affected by climate events, after severe losses hit several regions since October. The benefit, valid since October 16, aims to ensure a quick response and prevent production collapse in Brazil. Thus, the government seeks to stabilize the countryside and preserve food supply.
The BNDES Rural Debt Settlement Program allows for the settlement of debt related to operating costs, investments, and CPR contracts signed until June 30, 2024. Therefore, the mechanism acts as emergency support for those who have lost revenue and cannot maintain the agricultural cycle. Additionally, the credit is provided directly and with few barriers.
The movement reinforces the national effort in light of the rise of extreme climate events that pressure agribusiness. In this way, BNDES positions itself as a financial buffer in vulnerable regions. On the other hand, the government strives to prevent rural indebtedness from halting production.

Family Farmers Receive the Largest Share of the Benefit
Of the total released, R$ 1.5 billion, equivalent to 61%, was directed to family farmers and medium producers. This group suffers the most when climate events cause losses and, therefore, received priority. In this way, the program reinforces BNDES’s social role in the countryside.
So far, 8,300 operations have been approved, with an average ticket of R$ 296,000, demonstrating agility in release. Furthermore, the benefit has already reached 485 municipalities in 16 states, expanding national coverage. Therefore, the resources reach areas with different levels of damage.
This distribution strengthens the country’s food security and protects the most vulnerable sector of production. Meanwhile, the government attempts to prevent small producers from abandoning their activities. On the other hand, experts say that the advancement of climate losses makes these policies even more urgent.
Budget of R$ 12 Billion Expands Reach and Ensures Predictability
The program includes R$ 12 billion from the federal government, aimed at stabilizing rural production throughout Brazil. The repayment term extends to nine years, with one year of grace, allowing for business reorganization before payments resume. Thus, the producer gains the breath to resume activities.
The policy can settle debts related to operating costs, investments, and CPR, reducing risks and opening space for a new productive cycle. Therefore, BNDES seeks to prevent the collapse of affected producers and preserve jobs in the countryside. Additionally, the program targets regions severely impacted by climate events.
The president of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, reinforced this mission by stating:
“We are working to ensure a responsible path for farmers affected by extreme climate events to resume production. Through this program, we are ensuring financial breathing room and strengthening those who support the country’s food production and a sector that is one of the main engines of economic development.”
