With The New Investment of R$ 80 Million Released by BNDES for The Construction of Biomass Thermoelectric Plants in The State of Roraima, The Region Will Now Have New Growth Perspectives in The Energy Sector and Will Join The National Interconnected System.
The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) contracted a total of R$ 80 million for investment in the construction of biomass thermoelectric plants in the state of Roraima and, for this Wednesday (06/22), has already initiated the first stages of the project. A total of four plants will be built in Bonfim, Cantá, Pau Rainha, and Santa Luz, with the aim of diversifying the supply in the state and ensuring a new perspective for the energy sector in the region.
Four New Biomass Thermoelectric Plants Will Be Installed in Roraima with The Investment of R$ 80 Million Released by BNDES for The Construction of The Structures
BNDES is advancing on another project aimed at expanding the energy sector in northern Brazil and has now announced the release of a total investment of R$ 80 million for the construction of four biomass thermoelectric plants in the municipalities of Cantá and Boa Vista in Roraima.
The state is the only one in Brazil that is still not connected to the National Interconnected System (SIN) of energy, but will now have new perspectives for the sector with the new energy project.

The bank also announced that the investment funds are from the BNDES Climate Fund — Renewable Energy Modalities, and in addition to the construction of the biomass thermoelectric plants, they will also cover the costs of the transmission systems associated with the plants.
Thus, the Bonfim, Cantá, Pau Rainha, and Santa Luz thermoelectric plants will have a total installed capacity of 40 megawatts (MW), enough to supply 148 thousand households, thereby ensuring more energy security in the resource supply for the residents of the state.
Moreover, in addition to providing a new perspective for growth in the energy sector in the region, the investment in the construction of the biomass thermoelectric plants will also contribute to the environmental agenda of the region. This is because the project will reduce the need for diesel generation in the state, which, besides being more expensive, contributes to negative environmental impacts. Additionally, BNDES expects that the project will prevent the emission of about 2.8 million tons of greenhouse gases each year of operation.
Biomass Thermoelectric Plants Project Will Be Supplied with Reforestation Funds and The Investment Will Contribute to The State’s Environment
BNDES provided more details about the project for constructing power generation plants in the state of Roraima and emphasized that the biomass thermoelectric plants will be grouped into two areas (clusters), sharing utilities and connection systems, located 90 km apart. The first is Serra da Lua, which will be located in Cantá, and will include the Bonfim and Cantá plants, while the Jacitara cluster, in the capital Boa Vista, will host the Pau Rainha and Santa Luz plants.
Furthermore, all thermoelectric plants will be powered by biomass, meaning they will use wood chips, waste from the timber industry, and other organic waste to generate the energy that will supply the region.
To ensure less impact on the environment, BNDES assured that all fuel used will come from reforested areas and the planting process will avoid the destruction of new forest areas for the development of the initiative.
With the million-dollar investment released by BNDES, the state of Roraima will be able to enter the energy route of the Brazilian market and attract new investments for the potential of resource generation in the region over the coming years.
