Brazil Is Part Of A Select Group Of 12 Countries Internationally Recognized By The Nuclear Sector And Holds One Of The 7 Largest Uranium Reserves In The World
The Angra 3 nuclear plant is in the spotlight again after the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, stated that the bidding notice for the resumption of construction will be published in the second quarter of 2020. Four Foreign Groups Compete For Angra 3 Plant And Modeling Will Serve For Eight New Plants.
According to the minister, the document is being finalized by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES). “The important thing is that we are resuming the process,” said the parliamentarian, who then indicated the business model.

As for the construction, the expectation is that resumption will occur at the end of next year or the beginning of the following year, the minister added in a speech.
Currently, the nuclear sector is responsible for 2% of the country’s energy matrix, as highlighted in a publication by Valor Econômico.
Through a presidential decree, the resumption of the Angra 3 nuclear plant construction was included as part of the federal government’s Partnerships and Investments Program (PPI).

The announcement made by the minister took place on Friday, the 29th, at the inauguration event of the 8th cascade of ultracentrifuges, at the Nuclear Fuel Factory (FCN) in Resende (RJ), which also had the participation of the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, who, in turn, did not give a speech.
The unit belongs to the state-owned Nuclear Industries of Brazil (INB). With the operation of the cascade, INB will increase uranium enrichment production in the country by 20%, being able to produce 60% of what is necessary to supply the Angra 1 nuclear plant.
The federal government invested a total of R$ 18 million in the project in 2019. “This achievement should be a source of pride for all Brazilians, given that uranium isotope enrichment is a cutting-edge technology, 100% national, developed by our beloved Brazilian Navy, in partnership with the Institute of Nuclear and Energy Research (Ipen), there in São Paulo. Mastering this technology is a fundamental phase for the production of the fuel element that currently supplies the reactors of Angra 1 and 2 plants, the future fuel operation for Angra 3, and the Brazilian research reactors under development,” said INB President Carlos Freire Moreira.
