Discount for consumers who manage to save will be less than R$ 1 per kWh.

The energy crisis in Brazil is worrying, with experts saying that if nothing is done there is a real risk of blackout. The federal government is under pressure and, as a result, has been seeking alternatives to reduce energy consumption. One of the solutions presented was the possibility of granting a discount to customers who save energy, enabling a cheaper electricity bill.

According to information from Broadcast, the government has not yet defined the value that will be discounted for customers who manage to save. However, the government of Jair Bolsonaro considered giving a discount of R$ 1 real for each kilowatt-hour of energy saved. However, the proposal was quickly discarded because it was something that would not have a financial balance for the country's energy sector.

Exaggerated amount in the light bill discount?

Sector technicians stated that the value is exaggerated as it represents an amount of R$ 1 for each megawatt-hour. Today, the Brazilian consumer pays an average tariff of R$ 607,60 for each MWh. The country's water situation is worrying, however, the understanding is that it is not worth giving a discount so high to save energy.

The incentive program to reduce energy consumption was announced by Bento Albuquerque, Minister of Mines and Energy. The program will have a minimum target of energy savings for the consumer to be entitled to credit. The proposal for the program has not yet been closed, however, the expectation is that consumers who save between 10% and 20% of energy would receive a discount.

Discounts for customers who manage to reduce energy consumption will be funded through the System Service Charge, the ESS – a fee that is charged on the electricity bill itself. The main objective of the project is to avoid blackouts at times of peak energy use. If the program is successful, the reduction in demand will make it possible to reduce the cost of generation.
