Milton Steagall Highlights Brazil’s Potential in SAF Production at the Estadão Summit Agro 2023
Milton Steagall, CEO of Grupo Brasil BioFuels (BBF), sees Brazil as a future leader in biofuel production, comparing the country’s potential to Saudi Arabia in oil production. This vision was shared during his participation in the Estadão Summit Agro 2023, where he highlighted the crucial role of palm oil in decarbonizing the aviation sector.
Brazil as a Global Leader in Biofuels
Untapped Potential of Palm Oil
According to Steagall, Brazil has a unique opportunity to lead in the production of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and Green Diesel, using palm oil as a raw material. Currently, the country is ranked tenth in global palm oil production, but has significant potential to expand its cultivation sustainably, especially in the Amazon.
Favorable Legislation and Sustainable Production
Brazilian legislation, considered the strictest in the world for palm cultivation, allows planting in deforested areas of the Amazon until December 2007. With 31 million hectares available, Steagall highlights that Brazil can produce over 1.1 billion barrels of palm oil annually, surpassing oil production in Brazil’s pre-salt region.

With 160,000 m² of collectors, an area larger than 20 football fields, Silkeborg, in Denmark, hosts a solar thermal plant that heats 19,500 homes and could become the largest solar heating plant in the world.
Advances and Strategic Partnerships of Grupo BBF
Partnership with Vibra Energia and Production Expansion
Starting in 2026, Grupo BBF will supply SAF and Green Diesel to Vibra Energia, in a significant offtaker contract. The raw material will come from palm oil cultivated in the Amazon region, and refining will take place at the country’s first biorefinery, with an investment of over R$ 2.2 billion.
Alternative Use of Biomass
In addition to oil production, Steagall mentions the possibility of using palm leaves as biomass for renewable energy generation, maximizing the sustainable use of natural resources.
Challenges and Opportunities for the Future
Need for Financing and Job Generation
Steagall emphasizes the importance of financing for the development and recovery of palm cultivation areas. Manual cultivation generates thousands of jobs in remote regions, with Grupo BBF employing around 6,000 people directly in the North region.
Grupo BBF’s Contribution to the Renewable Energy Sector
Integrated and Sustainable Business Model
Grupo BBF adopts an integrated business model, operating from the sustainable cultivation of palm to the production of biofuels and renewable energy generation. With assets totaling around R$ 2.2 billion, the group generates approximately 7,000 direct jobs in the North region of Brazil.
Conclusion
Steagall concludes that Brazilian legislation, combined with the potential for sustainable production and strategic partnerships, positions Brazil as a future global leader in sustainable biofuel production. Grupo BBF plays a key role in this transformation, contributing to a new green revolution in the country.
The Estadão Summit Agro 2023 served as a vital platform to discuss Brazil’s potential and opportunities in transitioning to a greener and more sustainable economy, focusing on the production of clean and renewable energy.
