Project ‘Mobilize and Act’ Develops Actions to Combat the Culture of Normalization of Sexual Violence Against Children and Adolescents in the Amazon

Between 2017 and 2020, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), around 180,000 rapes involving victims up to 19 years old were recorded in Brazil – an average of nearly 45,000 cases per year. One third of this total involved children up to 10 years old. To help reverse this scenario, the ‘Mobilize and Act’ project, supported by Petrobras, develops actions to combat the culture of normalization of sexual violence against children and adolescents in Amazonas.

Project Aims to Develop a Protection Network for Children and Adolescents, as Well as Identification and Reporting of Sexual Crimes

Operating in the cities of Manaus and Coari, the project uses psychosocial support and educational workshops to strengthen the protagonism of children and adolescents and their family ties. It also works, through seminars, to mobilize professionals from the Rights Guarantee System who address the sexual violence against boys and girls. The project also aims to develop a protection network for children and adolescents, as well as identification and reporting of sexual crimes.

The ‘Mobilize and Act’ project operates under the premise that one of the biggest obstacles to combating sexual violence against children and adolescents is the social stigma. “This is a challenging initiative, as it deals with taboo subjects in society,” says coordinator Amanda Cristina. “This situation exists precisely because it signals a reality of profound violations and a cruel scenario that many refuse to acknowledge.”

Since 2020, when the partnership with Petrobras began, the ‘Mobilize and Act’ project has already provided socio-assistance support to 183 participants and their families. In addition, it has conducted two social diagnostics to support its actions, thirteen socio-educational workshops (three of them focused on early childhood), two seminars for public agents in Manaus, and one for agents in Coari, aiming to promote inter-institutional coordination among the various bodies, public institutions, and civil society organizations working in the rights guarantee system, in favor of children and adolescents.

Through the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program, Petrobras Supports Socio-Environmental Solutions in Various Locations Across the Country

“The support for the ‘Mobilize and Act’ project reinforces the company’s commitment to promoting the guarantee of the rights of children and adolescents and addressing social vulnerabilities identified in locations close to our operations, in alignment with our Human Rights policy,” states Marcela Levigard, social projects manager at Petrobras.

Through the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program, Petrobras supports socio-environmental solutions in various locations across the country, through partnerships with civil society organizations. The portfolio includes initiatives aimed at job and income generation; preparation for exercising citizenship; care for children and adolescents; conservation of coastal and marine biodiversity; and recovery of forests and natural areas, among others.
