For the first time in history, Brazil manages to be among the 10 largest countries with installed solar energy capacity

The month of March brings an important moment in the history of Brazil in the solar energy segment. After all, we managed to be among the top 10 countries with installed capacity in the world, the first time we have this position. The data are from the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena). According to data from Irena, Brazil conquered 24 Gigawatts in 2022, and there may be an increase with greater job creation In the next years.

However, the estimate of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) is that the installed capacity will have already exceeded 26 gigawatts in 2023. Thus, we were elected the 8th largest country generating solar energy. The sector is very optimistic and the tendency is for us to climb a few more steps in this ranking in the coming years. Check some numbers of our installed capacity.

Solar energy is already the third largest source in Brazil. Check out more information in the video below.

National geography favors the production of solar energy and other renewable sources

Brazil has a diverse geography in the 5 regions, and the solar incidence in the South, Southeast and Northeast is very attractive for solar energy generation. In addition, offshore winds off the national coast favor the installation of more renewable sources, such as wind energy. Companies have invested to extract the maximum benefit from these sources.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Mines and Energy aims to bring Brazil to the forefront in the energy transition. After all, this is a super possible mission, just investing in the reuse of natural resources, which can contribute to job creation.

All of this made solar energy go from the third to the second largest installed capacity in the country, taking into account small and medium-sized companies as well. Still, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Absolar), since July 2022, the installed capacity of solar energy in Brazil has grown by around 1 gigawatt per month.

Solar energy production grows 65,3% in Brazil in the first 15 days of March

The bulletin issued recently by the Chamber of Electric Energy Trading (CCEE) points out that national solar energy production grew by around 65,3% in the first 15 days of March. In this sense, we have about 1.978 average megawatts (MWmed) added to the account, which is a greater increase than in the same period of the previous year.

This was one of the sources that grew the most in 2023. After all, the wind power grew 42,3% and generation from thermoelectric and hydroelectric plants had a significant drop. With regard to the increase in total energy production, the highest increases in production were in the states of Maranhão, Rondônia and Acre, with 60%, 13% and 11%, respectively.

Sector will generate more than 300 jobs in 2023

Absolar pointed out that in 2023 more than 300 jobs only in the solar sector. This is the result of a massive investment of more than R$50 billion this year alone.

According to the association's survey, in 2023 there will be an increase of 10 gigawatts of installed power. Thus, at the end of the year, the expectation is that we will reach the mark of 34 gigawatts of capacity, rising in the world ranking.

However, it is worth mentioning that this implies a growth of 52% on the current solar energy power in Brazil. In this way, the sector is super optimistic and the expectation is that this source of energy will have more and more space in Brazilian homes.
