Project 'Mobilize and Act' develops actions to combat the culture of naturalization of sexual violence against children and adolescents in the Amazon

Between 2017 and 2020, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), around 180 rapes with victims aged up to 19 years were registered in Brazil – an average of almost 45 cases per year. One third of this total was children up to 10 years old. To help reverse this scenario, the 'Mobilize and Act' project, supported by Petrobras, develops actions to combat the culture of naturalizing sexual violence against children and adolescents in the Amazon.

Project seeks to develop a protection network for children and adolescents, as well as to identify and report sexual crimes

Operating in the cities of Manaus and Coari, the project uses psychosocial monitoring and educational workshops to strengthen the role of children and adolescents and their family ties. It also acts, through seminars, in the mobilization of professionals from the Rights Guarantee System who work to combat sexual violence against boys and girls. The project also seeks to develop a network to protect children and adolescents, as well as to identify and report sexual crimes.

The 'Mobilize and Act' project operates under the premise that one of the biggest obstacles in the fight against sexual violence against children and adolescents is social stigma. “This is a challenging initiative, as it deals with taboo subjects in society”, says coordinator Amanda Cristina. “This situation exists precisely because it signals a reality of profound violations and a cruel scenario that many refuse to see.”

Since 2020, when the partnership with Petrobras began, the 'Mobilize and Act' project has already promoted social assistance monitoring for 183 participants and their families. In addition, it carried out two social diagnoses to support its actions, thirteen socio-educational workshops (three of them on early childhood), two seminars for public agents in Manaus and one for agents in Coari, with a view to promoting inter-institutional articulation between the various bodies, public institutions and civil society organizations that work in the rights guarantee system, in favor of children and adolescents.

Through the Petrobras Socio-environmental Program, Petrobras supports socio-environmental solutions in various locations throughout the country

“Support for the 'Mobilizar e Agir' project reinforces the company's commitment to promoting the guarantee of the rights of children and adolescents and to tackling social vulnerabilities identified in locations close to our operations, in line with our Human Rights policy. ”, attests to Marcela Levigard, manager of Social Projects at Petrobras.

Through the Petrobras Socio-environmental Program, Petrobras supports socio-environmental solutions in various parts of the country, through partnerships with civil society organizations. The portfolio includes initiatives aimed at generating employment and income; to prepare for the exercise of citizenship; for the care of children and adolescents; for the conservation of coastal and marine biodiversity; and for the recovery of forests and natural areas, among others.
