V-Trace Facilitates Complete View of the Supply Chain Under Socio-Environmental Aspects and Meets Requirements of Major Markets for Brazilian Exports, Such as Europe and Asia

Bureau Veritas, a global leader in Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC), launches V-Trace, a verified traceability digital solution for monitoring and controlling supply chains. Through the tool, developed in collaboration with Optel, a global reference in traceability technology, the Group provides greater visibility and transparency regarding the origin of inputs, the quality and compliance of the goods, and the socio-environmental impact of each stage of the production process, contributing to strengthening the reputation of Brazilian producers. According to the Brazilian Agency for Promotion of Exports and Investments (ApexBrasil), in the first half of 2023 alone, the country exported US$ 23 billion in products to the European Union, which has strict guidelines on commodity imports, especially regarding deforestation control and protection of human rights.

“V-Trace combines our expertise in inspections and certifications with our operations in over 140 countries to offer a comprehensive and up-to-date solution on regulations in different markets. As society raises the level of accountability regarding the socio-environmental responsibility of companies, new regulations and criteria for the production and marketing of inputs emerge. Verified traceability adds value to products and increases market confidence, in addition to protecting the brand and reducing risks related to trade barriers,” explains Andressa Lisboa, Certification and Audit Director at Bureau Veritas.

The joint solution from Bureau Veritas and Optel enables the integrated mapping of companies’ supply chains so they can monitor all aspects and protect themselves from potential negative impacts associated with their suppliers. The data is compiled in a digital platform, practically and modularly to facilitate decision-making and the preparation of traceability reports. All information is verified by the Group’s specialists, contributing to the company’s credibility in the market and gaining a competitive advantage in the export sector. For end consumers, details about origin, quality, and sustainability are provided via QR Code printed on packaging.

In 2023, the volume of Brazilian exports is expected to grow by 5.4%, after already having increased by 4.4% in 2022, according to a report from the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV). Lisboa emphasizes that, in addition to complying with national legislation and internal market pressure for better socio-environmental practices and governance, exporters need to double their attention to the demands of destination countries. The European Parliament, for instance, enacted a law that prevents the entry of commodities into EU countries that have been produced in deforested, degraded areas or the result of labor that violates human rights and the rights of indigenous peoples. Germany requires companies with more than 3,000 employees to implement supplier risk management systems, and from April 2024, submission of compliance reports will be mandatory. Although it does not have a defined legislation, China, another major importer of Brazilian inputs, has been intensifying policies to encourage the socio-environmental traceability of supply chains.
