Platform That Connects Donor Companies of Food and NGOs Is the First in the Sector in Latin America to Receive the Evaluation Methodology

Bureau Veritas, the world leader in Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC), is responsible for verifying and validating the carbon inventory of the social startup Comida Invisível using the international methodology Food Low Waste – Verified Carbon Standard (FLW-VCS). The Group was responsible for auditing and producing a report with the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that were avoided through food repurposing, preventing CO2 by properly managing food.

“When auditing Comida Invisível’s data, we verified and validated the quality and safety of the entire process, in addition to contributing to the transformation of the community in partnership with the company that carries out this inspiring work. Our mission is to build a world of trust, always focused on our clients and motivated by society,” says Andressa Lisboa, director of Certification at Bureau Veritas.

The Comida Invisível platform has high data traceability, allowing different types of analysis at any phase. To receive validation, the company submitted the carbon inventory to Bureau Veritas, which calculated the estimated reduction of emissions through the food recovery life cycle methodology, compared it with the waste disposal flow to treatments and used the Food Low Waste – Verified Carbon Standard (FLW-VCS) methodology, applied to activities that reduce food loss and waste, keeping them in the human supply chain.

With the audit completed, the Group concluded that the company has a significant environmental and social contribution through a distribution logistics system that connects food donor companies and NGOs in need of donations, preventing waste and reducing landfill saturation with waste.

“For us at Comida Invisível, being a pioneer in adopting the methodology in Brazil and receiving validation from Bureau Veritas is of fundamental importance to ensure the seriousness and transparency of our work and in combating food waste,” points out Daniela Leite, CEO of Comida Invisível, the first donation platform in Brazil. “Our company has a secure process from a legal and health perspective, providing more peace of mind for donating companies, and we are very happy to once again contribute with robust and certified carbon inventory data, offering audited metrics and transparency in the waste combat process,” she adds.

In 2022, the world wasted the equivalent of 1 billion meals per day, according to a study released by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Although there are still 800 million people living in food insecurity on the planet, the waste amounts to US$ 1 trillion/year, causing a huge impact on the environment, in addition to being responsible for 8% to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), nearly five times more than the aviation sector, resulting in significant biodiversity loss by occupying nearly one-third of the world’s agricultural land.
