Chinese Brand Pickup Arrives in Brazil with Robust Technological Package, Helicoidal Spring Rear Suspension, and Elevated Comfort, but Limited Payload Capacity of 840 kg.
The BYD Shark Hybrid was unveiled in Brazil and is already attracting attention for its size and performance proposal. In a video recorded at the BYD dealership of Grupo Alma in Botucatu (SP), the evaluator Stanley Ravagnani highlighted that the pickup is larger than the Toyota Hilux and combines a 1.5 turbo gasoline engine with two electric motors. The total power disclosed is 435 hp, with torque close to 70 kgfm.
The setup allows for up to 100 km running solely in electric mode and about 800 km in hybrid mode, positioning the model as one of the most advanced pickups on the market. Even without an official price, the presenter mentioned estimates between R$ 300,000 and R$ 400,000, although he emphasized that these are just personal projections.
Suspension Provides Comfort but Limits Payload Capacity

One of the most relevant points of the project is the adoption of independent rear suspension with helicoidal springs, instead of the traditional leaf spring present in rivals like Hilux and S10. This solution provides more stability and comfort for occupants, especially in urban use and on long trips.

On the other hand, the direct impact is the load capacity of 840 kg, below the segment average, which usually exceeds 1 ton. For those seeking a pickup aimed at heavy-duty work, this may be a limiting factor. However, for consumers prioritizing drivability and comfort, the technical choice can be an attractive feature.
Highlight Technology and Equipment
The BYD Shark Hybrid presents itself as a pickup full of technology. The video mentions six airbags (front, side, and curtain), disc brakes on all four wheels, high-definition 360º cameras, front and rear sensors, as well as assistance systems such as blind-spot detector and ADAS package.
Inside, there are modern features like a rotating multimedia system compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 50 W induction charger with cooling, NFC for access and starting, as well as outlets in the cargo bed and in the second row of seats, including a 220 V outlet. The rear trunk offers 1,200 liters of capacity, with a built-in step and a lid with shock absorbers.
Mechanics and Construction
Under the hood, the combustion engine features direct injection, turbocharger, and timing chain, while the electric motors are integrated into the rear axle, eliminating the need for a driveshaft. The batteries were installed in the floor, helping to lower the center of gravity and improve stability.
The wheels are 18 inches with 265/65 R18 tires, accompanied by side steps and a tubular roll bar. Visually, the full-LED headlights with DRL that spans the entire front grille stand out, reinforcing the modern identity of the pickup.
The BYD Shark Hybrid arrives to compete for space in a segment dominated by traditional models such as Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S10, and Nissan Frontier. Its proposal combines high performance, extended range, and cutting-edge technological package, but sacrifices part of the load capacity for comfort.
And you, do you believe that the BYD Shark Hybrid can really outdo rivals like Hilux and Ranger in Brazil, even with lower payload capacity? Or for pickups, does robustness still outweigh technology? Leave your opinion in the comments.
