The Southeast Capital Will Make the City Shine. Resources Will Fund Overpasses, Widening, and New Connections.

The City Hall of Belo Horizonte took a decisive step to modernize the city’s mobility by preparing the bill that organizes the use of financing requested from the BRICS bank.

The goal is clear: to initiate a large package of roadway interventions that integrate the revitalization plan for the Ring Road.

The initiative gained momentum after discussions held in early October and will be crucial because the Southeast Capital will receive R$ 1 billion from BRICS to make the city shine, according to the municipal administration.

The text sent to the city councilors also formally authorizes the hiring of the international loan, which will allow immediate impact works on the traffic of the capital of Minas Gerais to be brought to life.

The first interventions should occur at points considered critical by the technical team of PBH.

Initial Interventions Prioritize Mobility and Fluidity

The city hall reported that the initial phase of the package includes improvements on Avenida Amazonas and the overpass under Avenida Teresa Cristina. These locations were chosen because they concentrate a large flow of vehicles and experience daily bottlenecks.

Additionally, the plan includes works on the overpass at Praça São Vicente and the widening of the São Francisco overpass, both essential to reduce retention points along the Ring Road.

Thus, the administration argues that these actions inaugurate a strategic phase that, as highlighted, “would pave the way for broader improvements.”

The city hall emphasizes that all choices follow technical criteria of urban mobility, reinforcing that the objective is to deliver interventions that truly improve circulation in Belo Horizonte, especially now that the Southeast Capital will receive R$ 1 billion from BRICS.

Possibility of New Work Depends on Evaluation of BR-040

Director Fernando de Oliveira Pessoa explained that there is room to include a fifth intervention in the package.

He reported that the expansion would depend on the analysis by the concessionaire responsible for BR-040, which presented the demand to the municipality during a public hearing in the City Council.

The company argues that the section of the highway needs to be widened to six lanes in each direction, which would require adjustments to the access to the Ring Road.

Technicians warned that, without adjustments, the location could suffer permanent congestion. The request is under evaluation by ANTT.

The city hall believes that integrating this new work into the package funded by BRICS would prevent future bottlenecks.

Therefore, the expansion would ensure a more balanced transition between BR-040 and the Ring Road, preventing the bottleneck at the capital’s entrance, one of the biggest concerns in Urban Mobility in Belo Horizonte.

Municipality Assumes 22.4 km of the Ring Road and Begins Restructuring

Since June, Belo Horizonte has been managing 22.4 kilometers of the Ring Road, between the Olhos D’Água neighborhood and Avenida Cristiano Machado. The municipalization occurred after an agreement was made with the Federal Government.

According to PBH, this direct control will allow improvements to be implemented with a focus on safety, efficiency, and accident reduction.

In this context, the loan requested from the BRICS bank becomes a central element to accelerate changes and finance structural interventions.

The city hall emphasizes that this moment marks the beginning of a new cycle for the urban mobility of the capital.

Thus, it believes that the partnership with the New Development Bank (NDB) will be decisive in preparing the city for the future demands of transportation and urbanization.

BRICS as a Driver of Urban Modernization

Reinforcing that the Southeast Capital will receive R$ 1 billion from BRICS to make the city shine, prioritizing mobility and infrastructure.

Thus, interventions, along with the reorganization of the Ring Road, should have a direct impact on the quality of life of residents and on the economic development of Belo Horizonte.
