Scania’s Natural Gas Trailer, Widely Used in Europe, Is Being Tested in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro by Marfrig
Marfrig, a global leader in hamburger production and one of the largest beef companies in the world, is implementing the first refrigerated natural gas trailer model in a testing phase. Serving the cities of Itupeva and Promissão in São Paulo, as well as the city of Rio de Janeiro, this trailer generates about 15% less pollution compared to a diesel oil trailer, a considerable advancement in the sector, given the logistical challenges preventing wider adoption of this technology: the difficulty of natural gas refueling.
“The use of alternative fuels, which are less polluting, represents a significant environmental gain for Marfrig, the population, and the planet. The implementation of the sustainable trailer is part of the company’s commitments and efforts to practically reduce environmental impact at all stages of the business,” says Luciano Alves, logistics director at Marfrig.
What Are the Ecological Impacts of Marfrig’s Natural Gas Trailer?
The natural gas trailer that Marfrig is using is a Scania model, which, according to the manufacturer’s website, has been widely used in various operations around the world, such as by Delgo Transport in Spain.

Like Marfrig, this Valencia-based company works with refrigerated transport, and as soon as Scania announced that it was working on a natural gas trailer model, this company decided it was time for a change.
Today, Delgo operates with 50% of its fleet using trailers similar to those that Marfrig is testing, and the results appear to be positive.
The company’s managing director, Félix González, even left a statement on the manufacturer’s website.
“When we learned that Scania was manufacturing gas trucks, we made 80% of the decision to acquire them,” he says. “And the results we achieved were much better than expected. Better consumption levels and, of course, lower emissions.”
This is undoubtedly an important step for the company towards a more sustainable future with fewer threats to the environment.
Who Is Marfrig? What Other Sustainability Actions Has It Been Taking?
Marfrig is a 100% Brazilian company, with operations in several countries across the Americas and products in over 100 countries. Specialized in meats and frozen foods, but now also producing plant-based meat substitutes, Marfrig has a global leadership position in hamburger production and is one of the largest producers of beef protein by quantity.
In the field of plant-based protein production, Marfrig has partnered with American Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) to create a joint venture called PlantPlus Foods!
In addition to all this success, Marfrig is also widely recognized for its sustainability actions.
The company, being in an area with a significant ecological impact, rigorously controls both the natural resources used in its production and the emissions throughout its entire production chain.
Another constant concern of the company is the well-being of the livestock. The company has been working according to the recommendations of WAP (World Animal Protection) in pursuit of constant optimization of animal welfare parameters.
All this logically translates into more quality and differentiators for the company and its investors. Marfrig is one of the companies listed in the Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) of B3, with its shares integrating the 16th portfolio of the ISE, valid for 2021.
