New Cars May Feature Technology That Detects Blood Alcohol Levels in Drivers
Soon, new cars may come equipped with technology capable of identifying the driver’s blood alcohol level. The idea came from the NTSB, the National Transportation Safety Board in the United States, and could be a good proposal to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
In this way, the agency received support from the NHTSA to turn the new project into traffic law, which aims to promote the creation or adaptation of technologies capable of limiting the ability to drive vehicles when the driver is intoxicated. In the U.S., the issue of traffic accidents is recurrent, and changes in new cars could reverse the situation. In Brazil, until mid-2022, the situation was similar. This is because data from the Federal Highway Police indicate that over 7,000 drivers were fined for driving under the influence of alcohol across the country.
U.S. Congress Believes in Changes to New Cars
When asked about the initiative, and whether it can come to fruition, a spokesperson for the NHTSA stated that the agency has already started its work to create rules aimed at new car driving technologies last year. For its part, the U.S. Congress recommends more vigorous action from the agency to ensure that new vehicles are equipped with technologies that prevent the driving of intoxicated individuals.

According to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, technologies like this could prevent around 9,000 deaths on American roads annually. Currently, there is a project underway, a system that identifies when a driver is impaired with a blood alcohol concentration equal to or greater than 0.08%. The technology can even prevent the car from moving and should accompany other safety features present in new cars, such as automatic braking, lane departure warnings, and other technologies.
If the rule is approved, American law states that the NHTSA must issue it by November 2024. Subsequently, car manufacturers will have up to two years to comply with the new requirement.
New Cars Can Prevent Deaths on the Road
The motivation for the new law came after an accident that killed nine people in California in 2021, including seven children. On a highway with a speed limit of 90 km/h, an intoxicated driver was driving at 160 km/h before losing control due to excessive drinking. According to authorities, the driver’s blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.
As a result, the accident killed the driver and eight people in another vehicle, which was traveling at 70 km/h. In conclusion, the report indicated that the cause of the fatal accident was due to the driver’s failure to control their vehicle, due to the high blood alcohol level. Therefore, the American Council stated that passive alcohol detection technologies in new cars prevent or limit drivers from operating their vehicles while intoxicated, providing significant potential to save lives.
