Ceará Is The State Responsible For About 20% Of Offshore Wind Farm Projects In Brazil, With Potential Of 26 GW Of Energy Expected
The Ceará already has approximately 20% of all offshore wind farm projects, that is, wind farms at sea, for the production of clean energy in Brazil, according to the Diário do Nordeste website.
If the projects for these wind farms are realized in the future, the mega-ventures would total a capacity of 26 GW (Gigawatts), according to data from the Brazilian Institute of the Environment (Ibama), the agency to which the environmental licenses are submitted, and could also generate over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Ceará Has A Total Of 11 Offshore Wind Farm Projects
In total, there are 11 projects in Ceará in different locations, such as Camocim, Caucaia, Morro Branco, among others. In terms of generated energy capacity, the largest is the Alpha wind farm, with a projected generation of 6 GW. Below, check out the list of offshore wind farm projects in Ceará;

- Ibitucatu Wind Farm Project (Equinor): 2 GW
“We hope that, in the medium/long term, most of these offshore wind farm projects will come to fruition,” said Joaquim Rolim, coordinator of the Energy Center of the Federation of Industries (Fiec).
“The potential for job creation in these billion-dollar wind farms is immense,” he says.
“Typically, the number of jobs generated in offshore wind farms is 10,000 to 15,000 jobs per GW. If we consider only 10% of the wind farms, we would have over 25,000 jobs created.”
The vast majority of jobs created with the installation of wind farms are for the construction of the parks at sea, however, Rolim foresees job creation in the fields of administration and law, for contract drafting and business management. There will also be jobs in engineering, for project development, in schools and universities, to train professionals who will work in the offshore area, and in equipment operation and maintenance, among others.
Energy Generation Market Requires Billion-Dollar Investments
In this energy generation sector, everything is superlative. To give you an idea, each GW installed represents a capital of about US$ 2 billion in investments.
To start developing offshore wind farm projects, Rolim points out that this new frontier of the Ceará economy, as well as the Brazilian one, still requires the detailing of the necessary regulations.
Another important factor is holding the federal auction for acquiring this new source of clean and renewable energy, which would boost its development and create “conditions for the utilization of the extensive resource available in Ceará and Brazil.”
Offshore generation will be essential for the success of green hydrogen, another trend in which the State positions itself at the national forefront.
Fiec Summit 2022
The development of offshore wind energy will be one of the topics addressed during the Fiec Summit 2022. The panel “Challenges of Offshore Wind Energy in Brazil” will take place on August 4, at 4:30 p.m., and will feature the participation of the chairman of Servtec, Lauro Fiúza Júnior, the executive secretary of energy and telecommunications at Seinfra, Adão Linhares, and Carlos Alberto Mendes, superintendent of Semace, moderated by the president of Sindienergia, Luiz Carlos Queiroz.
The Fiec Summit will take place on August 3 and 4, at the Casa da Indústria, in a hybrid format. For those interested in participating in the event, just register on the event website.
