Ford CEO Jim Farley Reveals Preference for Chinese Car in Daily Life and Exposes China’s Rapid Technological Evolution in the Automotive Sector. This Choice Raises the Question: Are Western Automakers Ready to Face the Challenge from Asian Manufacturers?

The recent admission that Ford CEO Jim Farley drives a Chinese car in his daily life has made an impact on the automotive industry.

Leading one of the largest automakers in the United States, Farley chose an electric model from Xiaomi, the SU7, a vehicle still little known outside of China.

This choice has drawn attention to the speed at which Chinese manufacturers advance in technology and design, surprising even executives from Western giants.

After all, what makes the Xiaomi SU7 Farley’s choice, while Ford seeks to expand its own line of electric vehicles?

The Xiaomi SU7: Power, Speed, and Innovation

The SU7 from Xiaomi goes beyond modern design.

Available in three versions in the Chinese market, the electric model impresses with its advanced specifications.

Equipped with BYD Blade batteries, two of its models come with dual motors, delivering up to 663 horsepower and 85.5 kgfm of torque.

These figures allow the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.78 seconds, reaching a top speed of 265 km/h, as highlighted by automotive analysts.

Farley’s choice of a high-performance model like the SU7 raises questions about Chinese technology and its impact on global competitiveness.

Ford Testing Chinese Vehicles: The “Existential Threat”

The Ford CEO had an epiphany during his last visit to China in September 2024.

Accompanied by CFO John Lawler, Farley tested models from various local manufacturers, including an SUV from Changan.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the experience was revealing.

Behind the wheel, both executives noted that Chinese manufacturers are ahead in the technological race, leading Farley to describe the situation as an “existential threat” to Western automakers who have always dominated the sector.

The Ford CFO, John Lawler, stated: “These guys are ahead of us,” emphasizing the urgency for Ford to adapt.

China’s Rise and the Uncertain Future of Western Automakers

Farley’s recent tests in China echoed the memory of when Japanese automakers, like Toyota and Honda, started to threaten the global market in the 1980s.

These companies were initially underestimated, but with affordable and efficient vehicles, they soon took over the American and European markets.

For Farley, Chinese manufacturers are on a similar trajectory, but at a much faster pace.

With the rise of brands like Changan, Geely, and BYD, which heavily invest in research and development, Ford faces a unique challenge in adapting to the future of electric and autonomous vehicles.

Ford’s Strategic Response: Innovation and New Models

To respond to the competition, Ford announced a restructuring that includes the creation of a new line of affordable electric vehicles, expected by 2027, with prices starting at US$ 30,000 (approximately R$ 160,000).

This model will directly compete with low-cost Chinese electric vehicles, offering an attractive alternative to the American and European markets.

We are recruiting the best technical and creative professionals to develop our next electric vehicles,” Farley stated.

The company aims to transform the traditional approach, developing electric cars that are profitable and affordable.

Setbacks and Challenges in Ford’s Plan

Despite the bold plan, Ford faces obstacles in its transition.

In July 2024, it announced the postponement of its plan to fully electrify its European lineup by 2030.

Now, it will choose to retain some hybrid and combustion models in Europe.

Additionally, the new generation of the popular F-150 Lightning has been postponed to 2027, and the seven-seater electric SUV, which was supposed to compete with large models from Tesla and European brands, has had its development halted.

These retreats reflect the difficulties traditional companies face in adapting to an increasingly digital and dynamic market.

The Chinese Leadership in the Automotive Sector

For Ford and other Western automakers, the advances of Chinese companies in areas like artificial intelligence, lithium batteries, and autonomous driving are a reminder of the urgent need for innovation.

Chinese companies, often underestimated in the West, are now dominating essential sectors of the automotive economy, and this leadership may reshape the future of the industry.

According to experts, the ability of Western automakers to adapt to the new reality will be critical for their survival and relevance in the market.

A New Era of Challenges for Ford and the West?

Ford and other traditional manufacturers are facing one of the greatest challenges in their history.

With the advanced technology and competitive pricing of Chinese models, the pressure to adapt has never been so intense.

The pressing question is: Will Ford be able to compete in a market dominated by Chinese technology and innovation?
