Project Estimated at Over R$ 18 Million with an Estimated Duration of 45 Days. The Goal is to Provide More Space for People to Walk
The sand strip at Praia dos Ingleses will be widened to 45 meters, according to the announcement.
The goal is to meet the high demand from the public for a more regular walking space, as the currently available sand area varies between 20 meters and one, making it difficult to pass in different directions along the beach.

The work will take place along 3 kilometers of the beach, starting from the southern corner of Ingleses and finishing just before reaching the Rio Capivari, about 400 meters away.
Topázio Neto, the mayor of Florianópolis, spoke about the change in the width of the sand strip over the years: “In Florianópolis, we have noticed over the years the rise in sea level in relation to the level of beach sand. Many of our beaches have seen reductions in sand strips. The nourishment returns the beach to its past condition. At Ingleses, there are places where the sea has taken everything and the water already reaches the walls of houses,” he commented.
Additionally, it has already been decided that the work will be extended to other important points in the city for tourism, such as Jurerê. Neto also commented on the decision: “More and more, Florianópolis is sought after as a tourist destination, and we need to have space on the sand for bathers to place their chairs. Furthermore, tourists particularly enjoy the beaches on the northern side of the island, such as Canasvieiras, Ingleses, and Jurerê.”
The forecast is that the expansion of the sand strip in Jurerê will also happen in 2023, although there is no prediction for the start of the work.
City’s Infrastructure Secretary Ensures That Praia dos Ingleses Will Continue to Be Used During the Estimated One and a Half Month Construction Period
Despite a short period reserved for the work, around 45 days, Valter Gallina, the Infrastructure Secretary of Florianópolis, emphasized that the beach can be used normally by bathers.
According to him: “We will isolate about 150 meters. We isolate this section, widen the sand strip, then we free the section and isolate another 150 meters. We will ensure safety for the bathers.”
The secretary also participated in the work in Canasvieiras, in Santa Catarina, and the system used will be the same, to replicate the previous success that occurred in 2020.
The ship came directly from Russia, and its technical characteristics were explained by Gallina: “It is one of the most modern dredges in the world, with 100 meters in length and 18 meters in width. This vessel will suck the sand from the seabed, within the deposit, and discharge it into a pipeline that leads to the beach. This pipeline floats on the water.”
The widening project of the sand strip at Praia dos Ingleses is expected to contribute to an increase in the number of visitors to the area. Operations with the Russian ship are expected to start soon.
