China Just Achieved A Historic Feat In Drilling Engineering With The Completion Of “Shenditake 1”, Considered The Second Deepest Vertical Well In The World. At A Depth Of 10,910 Meters, This Project Significantly Strengthens The Country’s Ultra-Deep Oil And Gas Exploration Capabilities.

The Deepest Vertical Well In The World Is Located In The Tarim Basin, In The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, One Of The Most Challenging Regions In The World For Drilling. In Addition To Advancing Resource Extraction, The Drilling Of This Well Represents A Major Leap For Geological And Climate Studies, Allowing Scientists To Explore The Earth’s History And Its Evolution Over Millions Of Years.

The Challenge Of The Tarim Basin

The Tarim Basin Is The Largest Oil And Gas Reservoir In China In Deep Water. It Is Estimated That 83.2% Of Deep Oil Resources And 63.9% Of Natural Gas Are Buried More Than 6,000 Meters Deep. However, Exploring This Wealth Is A Monumental Challenge Due To Complex Geological Structures And Extreme Environmental Conditions.

The Region Is Surrounded By The Tianshan And Kunlun Mountains, And Its Surface Is Marked By Extreme Temperatures And Hostile Terrain. To Enable The Drilling Of “Shenditake 1”, It Was Necessary To Develop Specific Technologies, Including A Robust Drilling System Capable Of Withstanding High Pressures And Temperatures Above 210ºC.

Breaking Records In Ultra-Deep Drilling

They Found Significant Indications Of Oil And Gas At Depths Over 10,000 Meters. This Discovery Opens New Possibilities For The Exploration Of Energy Resources And May Redefine The Global Oil Industry.

The “Shenditake 1” Not Only Reached The Impressive Depth Of 10,910 Meters But Also Broke Several Global Records. The Deepest Casing Cementing, The Deepest Wireline Imaging Record, And The Fastest Land Drilling Are Some Of The Achievements Of This Project.

The Drilling Took Over 580 Days, With The Last 910 Meters Being The Most Challenging, Requiring About 300 Days To Complete. Each Additional Meter Exponentially Increased The Complexity Of The Process, Making Constant Monitoring And Real-Time Adjustments To The Drilling Strategy Necessary.

The Project Crossed 12 Different Geological Formations And Reached Rock Layers Over 500 Million Years Old, Offering An Unprecedented Glimpse Into The Earth’s History.

The Technology Behind The Feat In The Deepest Vertical Well In The World

Faced With The Challenges Posed By This Type Of Exploration, The China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) Developed The World’s First 12,000-Meter Automated Drilling Rig. This Innovation Enabled Greater Precision And Safety In Drilling At Great Depths.

Advanced Profiling Tools Were Used To Analyze And Stabilize The Well, Preventing Structural Collapses And Formation Leaks. More Than 90% Of The Components Of The Drilling System Were Developed Internally, Demonstrating China’s Ability To Innovate And Lead In Ultra-Deep Exploration.
