Founded in 2000, the city in Santa Catarina became an international reference in classical dance upon receiving the only Bolshoi Theater branch outside of Moscow, combining Russian technical training and social inclusion that transforms the lives of young Brazilians.

The city in Santa Catarina chosen to house the only branch of the Bolshoi Theater School outside of Russia is Joinville, known as the national capital of dance. The choice followed the company’s performance at the 1996 Dance Festival, when the Russians were impressed by the structure and enthusiasm of the audience.

The partnership was formalized on March 15, 2000, with the inauguration of the Bolshoi Theater School in Brazil. Since then, Joinville has represented a direct link between Russian tradition and Brazilian artistic training, with a proposal that combines technical excellence and social transformation.

Professional Training with Russian Standard and Rigorous Discipline

City in Santa Catarina was chosen by Russia to house the only branch of the Bolshoi Ballet School outside of Moscow and today trains dancers for the whole world

The school follows the Vaganova methodology, the same applied in Moscow, recognized worldwide for its rigor and results.

The professional technical course lasts eight years, with a daily workload of about six hours, five days a week.

In addition to classical ballet, students study contemporary dance, Brazilian folk dances, music, theater, and art history.

The goal is to train well-rounded dancers, with a solid foundation and physical and stage preparation for international stages.

The technique is treated as a universal language, and mastery of it opens doors in renowned companies around the world.

Social Inclusion and Real Opportunities

The Bolshoi School in Brazil is a private, non-profit institution that offers 100% full scholarships.

Students receive free education, meals, transportation, uniforms, costumes, and medical, dental, and physiotherapy assistance, in addition to pedagogical support.

The selection process is national and annual, aimed at children aged 8 to 11.

In 2023, over 4,000 candidates competed for just 40 spots, demonstrating the high demand and prestige of the education.

The model allows underprivileged youth to access the same training as in major European centers, something unprecedented in Latin America.

Cultural, Social, and Economic Impact

In 2024, the school had 240 students from 20 Brazilian states and three foreign countries.

Since its inauguration, 455 dancers have graduated and now perform in more than 25 countries, in companies such as the Ballet de Santiago, the Teatro Colón, and European groups.

The presence of Bolshoi stimulates the economy of Joinville, generating direct and indirect jobs in tourism, hospitality, costumes, and events.

The city has become a symbol of cultural education and artistic qualification, with a visible impact on the self-esteem of the local community.

Comparisons and Global Recognition

Unlike the Russian school, which historically selects students based on strict technical criteria, the Brazilian branch was born with an inclusive vocation.

The focus is to train high-level professionals while using art as a tool for social ascension.

The teaching standard is comparable to that of international academies, such as the Royal Ballet School in London and the School of American Ballet in New York.

However, Bolshoi Brazil stands out for offering full scholarships to all students, something uncommon among elite institutions.

This policy ensures social diversity and representativity, making the project a global reference in education through dance.

Joinville, the Brazilian Capital of Ballet

The influence of the school transcends the stages. Joinville hosts the largest dance festival in the world, recognized by the Guinness Book, reinforcing the city’s status as a global hub of movement art.

The presence of Bolshoi has consolidated this ecosystem and transformed the city into a permanent center of culture, discipline, and opportunities.

The success of the school has elevated the name of Joinville and Santa Catarina onto the global dance map, creating a unique cultural brand in the country.

With the support of the state government, businesses, and the community, the project remains sustainable and true to its mission of combining technical rigor and social responsibility.
