New Solid-State Cooling System Uses Magnetism to Eliminate the Use of Harmful Gases, Reduces Energy Consumption, and Can Replace Air Conditioning Silently and Sustainably!

Imagine a world without the constant noise of air conditioning or fans, where the ambient temperature is controlled silently, efficiently, and with no environmental impact. Scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee (USA) are working to make this idea a reality.

They are developing a technology called solid-state cooling, which uses magnetism to lower the temperature of an environment. If it works as expected, this innovation could retire conventional air conditioning systems, bringing a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative.

What Is Solid-State Cooling?

Unlike what we see in current air conditioning units, which rely on refrigerant gases, solid-state cooling uses a completely new approach. The secret lies in a special material that, when exposed to a magnetic field, releases heat and cools the environment.

This process, known as the magnetocaloric effect, occurs when the material undergoes structural changes, absorbing and dissipating heat more efficiently. Thus, without requiring fans or gas, the system can keep environments cool in a silent and sustainable manner.

How Can Magnetism Replace Air Conditioning?

Solid-state cooling is better than air conditioning because it consumes up to three times less energy, significantly reducing electricity costs. Unlike traditional systems that rely on compressors and fans to circulate air, this new technology uses magnetism to cool environments directly and much more efficiently.

The major differentiator of this technology is the metal alloy used in the process. ORNL scientists have developed a material made of nickel, cobalt, manganese, and indium, which has an atomic property called ferroic glass. This characteristic allows the material to adapt to different shapes as it absorbs heat, ensuring much more effective thermal control.

With a more intense magnetic field, the efficiency of this system can be up to three times greater than that of a conventional air conditioner. This means less energy will be needed to maintain a comfortable temperature in an environment, resulting in lower electricity consumption and reduced costs.

Benefits of Solid-State Cooling

Currently, conventional air conditioning systems use refrigerant gases that can be harmful to the environment. Although there are safer options, such as R32 gas, there is still no 100% sustainable method for climate control.

With solid-state cooling, this problem is eliminated. The process does not use harmful gases, reducing the emission of substances that contribute to the greenhouse effect and global warming.

Efficiency and Energy Savings

Besides the environmental issue, this technology also promises enhanced efficiency and savings. Magnetic cooling does not require moving parts, making the system much quieter than current air conditioners and fans.

With no need for compressors or motors, energy consumption can be significantly reduced. This translates to lower electricity bills and less energy waste.

Future Applications of Solid-State Cooling

Scientists believe this technology can revolutionize not only domestic and industrial climate control systems but also the cooling of electronic devices.

The company Frore Systems has already presented a cooling system for computers based on this technology during CES 2024. This new method can replace traditional fans and water coolers, allowing devices to operate at lower temperatures without the need for bulky and noisy components.

Additionally, there is potential for this innovation to be applied in sectors such as medicine and the automotive industry, improving thermal control of medical equipment and electric motors.
