Million-Dollar Investment Promises to Shorten Distances in Southern Piauí and Strengthen Strategic Corridor for Transportation of Grains, Inputs, and Minerals, with Application of Thicker Asphalt and Completion Expected in Two Years.
The government of Piauí and DNIT authorized remaining works for the implementation and paving of BR-235 in the south of the state, with an estimated investment of R$ 375 million and a timeline of 24 months, to complete the link between Guaribas and Bom Jesus.
The service order was signed on Friday, February 13, 2026, with participation from Governor Rafael Fonteles and the National Department of Transportation Infrastructure, in an agreement that provides for execution by the Piauí State Transportation Secretariat.
According to the planning released, the intervention is expected to reduce the route currently used between Caracol and Bom Jesus, shortening the distance from 432 kilometers to about 150.7 kilometers by opening a more direct corridor.

Paving of BR-235 between Guaribas and Bom Jesus
The announced phase encompasses approximately 60 kilometers of remaining extension, ensuring the continuity of the stretch that starts from the border of Piauí with Bahia and extends to the junction with BR-135, already in the segment between Guaribas and Bom Jesus.

In the stretch that is under construction, DNIT reports that the highway has a total length of about 150 kilometers, with more than 90 kilometers already implemented, in the segment that goes from the BA/PI border to about 25 kilometers after Guaribas.
In addition to completing points that are not yet paved, the project includes reinforcement of the existing pavement, with an increase of 8 centimeters in thickness where pavement already exists, to enhance durability and road capacity in the face of heavy traffic.
In the segments that will be implemented in this phase, the specifications provide for the application of plant-mixed asphalt in a layer of 10 centimeters, a model associated with CBUQ, while the schedule expects completion within 24 months from the signing.
Reduction of Distance Between Caracol and Bom Jesus
Currently, without the continuity of the corridor via BR-235, the transportation of loads and vehicles between Caracol and Bom Jesus often relies on longer alternative routes, which increases costs and travel time by circumventing sections without pavement.
With the delivery of the remaining stretches, the expectation communicated by the involved agencies is to shorten the path to about 150.7 kilometers, bringing closer municipalities in the extreme south of Piauí and reducing stages in regional merchandise transportation.
The connection is considered strategic for crossing an area that combines agricultural production and circulation of inputs, in addition to facilitating local displacements and integration with already established federal highways, such as BR-135 around Bom Jesus.
Partnership Between Setrans, Ministry of Transport, and DNIT
The execution will be carried out by Setrans in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and DNIT, as described in official communications, in an arrangement that combines state management and federal technical guidelines to expedite the project’s delivery.
DNIT also reported that the signing of the service order marks a new phase to continue the implementation and paving in the southern stretch of Piauí, focusing on reaching the junction with BR-135 and completing the planned connection.
The bidding and planning detail discontinuous segments within the stretch, totaling just over 60 kilometers remaining, with mileage milestones distributed at different points along the route, indicating simultaneous work fronts.
Logistical Importance of BR-235 in the Northeast and North

BR-235 is described as a transversal highway that crosses different regions of the country, linking Aracaju, in Sergipe, to the Brigadeiro Velloso Test Field, in Novo Progresso, Pará, passing through several states along the way.
In Piauí, the segment in focus involves areas close to the border with Bahia and the connection with southern Maranhão, creating a route that tends to organize flows between interior cities and hubs like Bom Jesus, a regional service reference.
Impact on Grains, Inputs, and Regional Transportation
The institutional materials from the state government and specialized portals indicate that the work is seen as relevant for the flow of production and for the circulation of fertilizers and other inputs, reducing distances and dependence on dirt roads.
In a statement recorded at the announcement, Rafael Fonteles said: “Today alone was a service order of R$ 375 million for such an important BR that connects Guaribas to Bom Jesus,” while citing the integration between regions of southern Piauí.
Also according to the released statement, the governor mentioned that, when combined with other federal government works on highways, investments would exceed R$ 3 billion, while classifying the project as relevant for “developing all of the southern State.”
The road already has a paved section, and with the new phase, the responsible agencies indicate that it will be possible to consolidate a more continuous link, reducing bottlenecks during rainy periods and increasing transport predictability between municipalities.
