There Is Still Huge Potential to Be Explored in Brazil, Where About 2% of Households Have Photovoltaic Systems

A few years ago, acquiring a residential photovoltaic generation system was a benefit that few could enjoy, as the installation costs for these kits were very high and, therefore, only affordable for a few. Over time, the possibility of installing these panels for solar energy generation has become more accessible, and currently, there is even the option to obtain the new generation of solar energy – the storage of this energy source.
Brazil recently reached the milestone of 2 million households with solar energy generation on rooftops, according to data from Absolar (Brazilian Association of Solar Energy), which proves the expansion of this photovoltaic source, but there is still enormous potential for this market, as these installations are present in an average of 2% of homes in Brazil.
Today, the factors that motivate the installation of a solar kit go beyond saving on the electricity bill. The increasingly frequent blackouts are causing huge losses in various Brazilian regions due to interruptions in power supply. In this sense, only the traditional solar energy system would not solve the problem, as it is connected to the utility’s grid. That is why the new generation of photovoltaic energy, which is starting to arrive in Brazil, is likely to take this space – solar energy storage using hybrid inverters.
The world already knows this, and moreover, this system is already quite advanced in countries like the USA and Europe, where a large part of the households that make new installations of photovoltaic systems already have a storage system. According to a joint survey by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and consultancy Wood Mackenzie, in 2023, energy storage in the USA accounted for 13% of residential installations and 5% of others. In 2024, the expectation is that 25% of residential systems will have batteries.
Brazil is starting to follow the path of many countries that have already realized the benefits of self-producing clean energy and energy independence, conditions that are possible with solar storage. Among the factors that have generated this optimism and contributed to making this market even more attractive is the reduction of costs for photovoltaic kits, which, in 2023, saw a reduction of around 40%, according to a mapping conducted by Portal Solar. This scenario, also according to Portal Solar, contributed to the reduction of payback, that is, the time for return on investment, by 10% to 20%.
To illustrate, according to Greener, in January 2023, the consumer would take 4.4 years to pay off the investment; by 2024, this time was reduced to 3.3 years. “Today, the storage system has the same value as the traditional system from three years ago. In addition to the reduced cost, there is currently this possibility of storage in batteries, which adds even more value, as the consumer has guaranteed energy security,” emphasizes Gilberto Camargos, CEO of SolaX Power in Brazil. This is because, even in the case of a blackout, the supply is not interrupted, as the stored energy is used.

It is important to emphasize that with this equipment, it is possible to store energy even in apartments. “The residential sector (houses) represents the majority of consumers of this type of photovoltaic system, but these devices also provide energy security to apartments, which can store solar energy even without panels, or to small businesses, large industries, as well as rural properties, since in all these areas being without power supply for long periods causes many losses,” explains Gilberto.
About SolaX Power – It is a multinational company founded in 2012, headquartered in Hangzhou, China, and with subsidiaries in several countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and the USA. With more than 2,000 employees worldwide, the company is recognized for its work in research and development: it has over 100 international patents and more than 500 market certifications. Its portfolio consists of photovoltaic inverters, energy storage solutions, vehicle chargers, and advanced energy management systems.
