Investments Foster the Creation of Over 18,000 Jobs and Consolidate the State as a Highlight in Photovoltaic Capacity
Throughout this year, the southern region of Brazil has witnessed a significant wave of investments in solar energy projects, totaling a substantial R$ 2.2 billion. This financial injection not only reinforces the commitment to renewable sources but also boosts the local economy, resulting in the generation of 18,400 new formal jobs in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, according to GHZ.
This vigorous investment positions the region as one of the national leaders in installed photovoltaic energy generation capacity, accumulating 2.27 gigawatts (GW) from various sources, such as residences, commercial establishments, industries, rural properties, and public buildings.
Rio Grande do Sul at the Forefront of Solar Energy
Ranked as the third Brazilian state with the largest solar energy generation capacity, Rio Grande do Sul has played a prominent role in the country’s energy revolution. Over the past ten years, the sector has attracted a total of R$ 11.9 billion in investments, an increase of 22.6% compared to the R$ 9.7 billion recorded at the end of 2022. In addition to contributing to the expansion of a sustainable energy matrix, these investments have been the main driving force behind the creation of new jobs in the state.

Mato Grosso do Sul excels in the sugar-energy sector: the state reaches a milestone of 22 operating mills and accelerates the production of clean energy in MS with a focus on sustainability.
In the first seven months of 2023, the solar industry in Rio Grande do Sul hired 18,400 workers, bringing the total number of jobs to 68,100 in the state. This increase represents a growth of 37% compared to the 49,700 jobs recorded the previous year. The Brazilian Solar Photovoltaic Energy Association (Absolar) forecasts that the country will reach the milestone of 1 million jobs by the end of this year, considering the current scenario with 960,000 positions filled.
New Perspectives and Challenges on the Investment Horizon
Although the results are promising, the solar energy industry faces significant challenges. The interpretation of legislation and the complex relationship with energy distribution companies are points of contention. The state of Rio Grande do Sul awaits consensus on the “reverse flow” rule, which refers to the surplus solar energy generated by consumers who are also producers. This has created deadlocks that affect the progress of new projects.
Although the road ahead is challenging, the combination of solid investments and the growing awareness of the importance of solar energy for a sustainable future keeps the hope alive that Rio Grande do Sul will continue to lead the race towards a cleaner energy matrix and rising employment. With the solar industry significantly contributing to the state’s economically responsible growth, the horizon shines with promising possibilities.
