Elon Musk’s Proposal to Replace Traditional Fighter Jets with Drones and Their Implications for US Defense

Billionaire Elon Musk, appointed by elected president Donald Trump to lead a commission tasked with cutting federal spending in the US, made a controversial statement this Monday. Musk suggested that modern fighter jets, like the iconic F-35, should be replaced by military drones. This statement sparked an intense debate about the future of American military aviation, according to oglobo.

Criticisms of the F-35: An Obsolete Machine?

Musk did not hold back criticism of the F-35, a fighter jet manufactured by Lockheed Martin, considered the jewel of the US Air Force since it became operational in 2015. On his platform X, he stated: “Manned fighter jets are obsolete in the era of drones. They only serve to kill pilots.” This statement was accompanied by a video showing hundreds of drones flying at various altitudes, highlighting his view on the evolution of military technology.

Recently, contracts have been signed to export the F-35 to countries like Romania, Poland, and Germany, but Musk and his critics raise questions about its complexity and high cost. To him, the F-35’s design is problematic because “they tried to ask too much of it,” resulting in a “complex and expensive” machine without combat specialization.

The High Cost of Military Aircraft

According to Mauro Gilli, a researcher at the Federal Polytechnic School of Zurich, the high cost of the F-35 comes from the software and electronic components, not the pilot itself. He explains that a reusable drone would need to incorporate all the robust electronic components of the F-35, which would also represent a high cost.

Gilli points out that the existence of aircraft such as the F-35 and the B-1 forces countries like Russia and China to invest in similar technologies for protection, especially in advanced radar systems. “The mere existence of the F-35 and B-1 forces Russia and China to make strategic decisions that they would not otherwise need to make,” he states.

Strategic Implications of Musk’s Proposal

Although Musk has his convictions, Gilli emphasizes that even if he were correct (which, according to the expert, is not the case), eliminating traditional fighter jets could reduce the strategic challenges faced by the US regarding its rivals.

A New Era for Military Aviation?

Musk’s proposal raises important questions about the future of military aviation and the viability of drones as substitutes for traditional military aircraft. As the discussion continues, the tension between innovation and cost, as well as strategic implications, are topics that will certainly remain at the forefront of future defense discussions in the US.
