The Biggest Megaprojects Under Construction in the United States
The Modernization of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
The LAX International Airport is being transformed. The airport, one of the busiest in the world, is receiving a $14 billion investment to be modernized before the 2028 Olympics.
The project includes a new automated transportation system that will connect the terminals to three new external stations. This change promises to reduce congestion and facilitate access to public transportation.
The world’s largest car rental center is also being built, with capacity for 18,000 vehicles. Terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5 are also undergoing renovations to offer more comfort and safety for passengers.
Tesla’s Giant Giga Texas Factory
Tesla is expanding its electric vehicle production. In the outskirts of Austin, Texas, the company is building Giga Texas, one of the largest factories in the United States.
The facility has a built area of over 929,030 m², equivalent to 1,545 soccer fields. This mega structure will be responsible for manufacturing the Cybertruck and the Tesla Semi, two models set to revolutionize the automotive market.
Construction began in 2020, and production reached 3,000 units per week by the end of 2022. The site is not just a factory. It represents an important step in the global transition to sustainable energy.
The Construction of the New Tunnel Under the Hudson River
The Hudson Tunnel is one of the most anticipated projects to improve transportation between New Jersey and Manhattan. With an investment of $16 billion, the project includes the construction of a new rail tunnel and the renovation of the existing tunnel, which was damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
The new tunnel will be 2.6 kilometers long and 8 meters in diameter. It is expected to be completed by 2035. After that, the current tunnel will undergo renovations and is expected to be finished in 2038.
This project is part of the Gateway Program, a larger plan to modernize rail transportation in the United States. The project will also generate 95,000 jobs and boost the economy by $19.6 billion.
The Renovation of Penn Station with the Moynihan Train Hall
New York has gained a new transportation space with the inauguration of the Moynihan Train Hall. The building, which is part of the old James A. Farley Post Office Building, underwent a $1.6 billion construction.
The station alleviates congestion at Penn Station and offers more comfort for passengers. The project preserved the historical architecture of the site, including the stone façade and Corinthian columns, but introduced innovations such as a central hall illuminated by a 28-meter skylight.
The new structure features commercial areas, dining options, and an exclusive lounge for Amtrak. The connection to the 8th Avenue subway has also been enhanced.
The High-Speed Train in California
California is building the first high-speed train in the US. With an investment of $80 billion, the project promises to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles in just 2 hours and 30 minutes, drastically reducing travel time.
The trains will reach speeds of 350 km/h, becoming a faster and more sustainable alternative to road and air transport. The first phase of construction began in 2015, and the initial section, which links the Central Valley to Los Angeles, is expected to be finished by 2029.
In addition to reducing travel time, the project has a significant environmental impact. It will reduce the number of cars and airplanes in circulation, decreasing the emission of polluting gases. The expectation is that the train system will generate thousands of jobs and boost the local economy.
