Itaboraí could be reborn as a thermal energy generation center, says Petrobras president who guaranteed investments of US$ 4 billion and around 7.500 jobs for 2020 at Comperj

Petrobras will invest in thermal generation plants at Comperj, the President of the state-owned company announced an agreement with Equinor after ruling out the construction of a refinery at the site, as announced by us at Click Petróleo e Gás last Thursday, December 12th.

According to the president, “CNPC had no interest in the project”. Still according to the executive, “it would be contradictory for Petrobras to be selling its refineries and building another one”. He added that studies with the Chinese company CNPC showed that building a refinery at Comperj would be economically unfeasible.

But not all is lost, let's go with the good news, Castello Branco stated that, next year, around 7.500 jobs will be maintained in the region, through an investment of US$ 4 billion, around R$ 16,36 billion in conversion directly, in works in the complex with the construction of the UPGN, which will process the natural gas, and the gas pipelines. The statement was given at a cafe with journalists, promoted by the state-owned company.

“The Itaboraí area will be reborn as a great thermal generation center”. With this sentence, the president of Petrobras, Roberto Castello Branco, detailed two projects that are underway at the Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex (Comperj), in Itaboraí, over coffee with journalists.

According to him, one project is the construction of thermoelectric power generation plants with natural gas from the pre-salt layer, which will be carried out in partnership with Equinor.

“There is a gas pipeline being built, the UPGN (Natural Gas Production Unit), (the Comperj) will be an excellent place for the construction of thermal plants”, added Castello Branco.

The president of the state-owned company spoke again about the use of Comperj to produce 2nd generation lubricants using pipelines from the Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc). The expectation is to create job vacancies in the region.
