The Resumption of Construction at the Natural Gas Processing Unit in Comperj Has Left the Residents of Itaboraí Excited.
The resumption of investments from the Petrochemical Complex of Rio (COMPERJ) in Itaboraí in the metropolitan region has generated optimism in the city, especially for Simone, a restaurant and inn owner: ” We suffered losses not only from the halted construction but also from some companies that failed to make payments to us; we are hopeful that the works will return with full force or at least half so the city can truly take off.”
The COMPERJ was to be the largest industrial project in the country, but four years ago it suffered a severe wave of layoffs due to the crisis at Petrobras. The complex was also the target of investigations in the Lava-Jato operation and left the city abandoned. Closed stores or those for rent, vacant commercial spaces, buildings, and stalled developments. Now the completion of the natural gas processing unit, essential for the operation of COMPERJ, emerges as a relief for the municipality that is rehearsing an economic recovery.
” The expectation is very positive; we even imagine opening a flat in the coming months as we prepare for this, keeping an eye on the influx of people coming to work in the city,” exclaims Guilherme Lubrano, Business Administrator. According to the Brazilian Association of Machinery and Equipment (ABIMAQ), the sector will have an impact of 18,300 jobs. ” The resumption of investments and the return for the completion of COMPERJ is essential for the Itaboraí region that aspires to the completion of the project,” states Karine Fragoso, oil and gas manager at FIRJAN.”

The Natural Gas Processing Unit is expected to generate around 5,000 direct jobs, according to the city hall. The forecast is that construction should be resumed in June of this year (2018). ” Approximately 8 billion dollars will be moved in the UPGN; for the refinery, Petrobras is seeking an international partner to complete it,” says the mayor of Itaboraí, Sadinoel Souza.
