Ceará Receives Investment of US$ 90 Million in Green Hydrogen at the Pecém Complex. Investment Includes Installation of Basic Infrastructure and Other Essential Works.

A External Financing Commission (Cofiex), an agency linked to the Ministry of Planning and Budget, approved on Wednesday (6) financing of US$ 90 million for infrastructure works at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (Cipp). The improvements to be made with this investment are essential for the arrival of the green hydrogen hub.

Ceará Celebrates Investment in Green Hydrogen at the Pecém Complex

In addition to the financing amount, the Cipp will contribute US$ 10 million. The works at the Pecém Complex include the installation of basic infrastructure for utility corridors and access to the productive sector of H2V in the Pecém Complex, such as: the expansion of the Multi-Utility Terminal (TMUT) of the Port of Pecém, which is receiving a new berth, and the expansion of Pier 2 of the port terminal for H2V and its derivatives.

On social media, Governor Elmano de Freitas celebrated the approval of the financing and stated that he is in talks with companies interested in investing in the green hydrogen chain in the state.

The governor of Ceará states that, so far, 32 memorandums of understanding have been signed to secure commitments for the installation of projects in the sector in the state. This funding will allow structural changes in the industrial complex, enabling the transition from pilot projects to industrial scale H2V.

The president of the Pecém Complex, Hugo Figueiredo, emphasizes the importance of this investment. The executive highlights that the green hydrogen projects at the Pecém Complex are expected to reduce perceived risks by developers and private financiers, thereby accelerating the transition from pilot projects to industrial scale by investing in shared capacities and infrastructure to facilitate the implementation of the green management chain in the state.

Ceará Stands Out in Other Projects

In June of this year, the Administrative Council of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) had already approved a plan of US$ 70 million to support grid flexibility for renewable energy integration in Brazil, with US$ 35 million allocated for green hydrogen projects at the Pecém Complex. This funding will still be analyzed by Cofiex.

The investment is for the implementation of shared infrastructures and for a training and innovation hub for the H2V chain in the Pecém region, consolidating education and encouraging innovation in the area.

Among Brazilian states, Ceará has the most planned projects. As previously mentioned, 32 memorandums of understanding have been signed with national and foreign companies, signaling investments of over US$ 30 billion (R$ 145.7 billion). Of this total, there are three pre-contracts already signed, with an estimated investment of US$ 8 billion (R$ 38.8 billion).

Understand the Race for Hydrogen – The Fuel of the Future

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and has the potential to reduce the environmental footprint of carbon-intensive sectors and boost the process of energy transition. Hydrogen is seen by many as the fuel of the future.

However, it is not just any hydrogen that the market is looking for. The enthusiasm is for its sustainable version, known as green hydrogen, production of which Brazil is positioned to lead globally.

Green hydrogen is derived from water, in an extraction process that uses renewable electric energy to break the molecule and separate gaseous hydrogen from oxygen.

For Brazil, the sector could be a great opportunity, as the country has favorable climatic conditions for generating wind and solar energy; thus, Brazil could become one of the main producers and exporters of green hydrogen.
