New Hybrid SUV Offers Exceptional Fuel Consumption of 21.7 km/l, Leaving Corolla Cross and Renegade Behind
The latest SUV from Renault, the Symbioz, arrives to strengthen the French manufacturer’s presence in the competitive SUV segment, where Renault already has established models. With plans to launch a new SUV in Brazil, superior to the Duster, the Symbioz might hint at what to expect in the national market.
Design and Aesthetics of the SUV Symbioz
From a design perspective, the Symbioz showcases several features that may remind one of the updated European Renault Captur, especially at the front. The grille and LED headlight setup are virtually the same, and the front lights also pay homage to the Captur. A distinction of the Symbioz can be noted in the roofline at the rear, which adds a subtle coupé-style touch.
Dimensions and Interior Space
In terms of size, the Symbioz stands out from other Renault options in the segment. Measuring 4.41 m in length, this SUV is part of the complete E-Tech line (hybrid), which also includes the Arkana (4.57 m) and the Austral (4.51 m); now, customers also have fully electric options like the Megane and the Scenic. For comparison, the Jeep Compass measures 4.40 m in length.

The Symbioz is slightly longer than the new Captur, but the wheelbase is the same. This results in an expanded boot space for the Symbioz, which features 629 liters when the rear seat is moved forward (approximately 16 cm), thanks to a seat that slides on tracks. Normally, the load capacity is 492 liters. The model also offers the convenience of an electric trunk opening.
Convenience and Connectivity
Internally, the Symbioz provides 24.7 liters of storage space in compartments on the passenger side, including 7 liters in the glove compartment alone. It also stands out for mobile device connectivity, with two USB-C ports in the front and two more in the back. In higher trim models, a wireless smartphone charger is a standard feature.
Innovations in the Sunroof and Mechanics
The SUV is also equipped with AmpliSky, a sunroof without a curtain featuring an active system that can become opaque in segments, as desired by the driver, using PDLC technology (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal).
On the mechanical side, the Symbioz SUV is less powerful than other Renault models. It comes with a single E-Tech Full Hybrid mechanical option, offering a total power of 145 hp. This hybrid system combines two electric motors (one main motor of 36 kW and an 18 kW high voltage starter generator (HSG)) and a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with 94 hp, along with a 1.2 kWh battery. The transmission is an Intelligent Multimode gearbox without a clutch, featuring four gears for the gasoline engine and two for the main electric drive.

Cutting-Edge Technology and Driver Assistance Are Available in This SUV
This system is similar to that found in the fully hybrid Clio E-Tech and the new fully hybrid Captur E-Tech. The Symbioz introduces the new E-Save function, activated through a button on the left side of the steering wheel, which optimizes fuel consumption while keeping the battery charge above 40%. Renault states that the average fuel consumption of the Symbioz is 21.7 km/l.
Inside, the Symbioz features the latest technology, including the openR link multimedia system with integrated Google in the Techno version, based on Android Automotive 12. It is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with or without a cable. The central touchscreen measures 10.4 inches, standard across all versions, while the digital instrument panel in front of the driver measures 10.3 inches.
The SUV Symbioz also comes with an extensive range of driver assistance systems (ADAS) with up to 29 different technologies. Among the highlights are Active Driver Assist (level 2 assistance) and intelligent speed adaptation, mainly concerning the ‘Stop & Go’ adaptive cruise control system, lane keeping assist, and sign recognition system.
The automatic emergency braking system in reverse, which operates between 3 and 10 km/h, is also an important feature. A new “My Safety Switch” button on the left side of the steering wheel allows the driver to activate or deactivate their preferred settings for six ADAS or parking functions, aided by a 360° vision camera, front, rear, and side sensors, rear cross traffic alert (RCTA), or safe occupant exit (OSE).
Production and Availability
The Renault Symbioz SUV will be produced in the brand’s assembly line in Valladolid, Spain. So far, four versions have been announced: Techno, Spirit Alpine, and Iconic. The prices have not yet been disclosed, but deliveries are scheduled to begin in Europe in the second half of 2024.
