After CNG received a 39% increase from Petrobras, consumers found a “new” option to fuel their vehicles: biogas (CNG), which lasts longer and is even cheaper

To escape the high prices of gasoline, diesel and ethanol, consumers resorted to the use of Natural Vehicular Gas (CNG), but even this fuel has been expensive, now having biogas (CNG) as an alternative.

Increase in CNG affects consumers' pockets

In April, Petrobras announced a 39% increase in CNG for distributors. The final price for consumers, in May, according to the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) hit a price of R$ 4,199 in some points of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, despite not being an updated solution, biogas (CNG) is gaining popularity because it yields more in vehicles and is still cheaper for consumers.

Glauber dos Santos, 32, an app driver, says he started using biogas on the advice of colleagues, who used it in their vehicles. According to him, who has a 1.0 liter car, with an 8m³ cylinder, he can travel 120 kilometers with a full tank of CNG, while with CNG he can cover 150 kilometers.

The voice of an expert and the possible expansion of biogas – CNG

According to Jorge Mathuiy, commercial director of the MAT cylinder industry, while CNG can be taken from sources linked to oil, for example, CNG has similar characteristics, however it is extracted from organic matter that comes from landfills, sugarcane bagasse -sugar and compost.

After being extracted, the CNG is placed in a truck and taken directly to consumers. Mathuiy says that, currently, around ten gas stations in Rio offer this type of fuel, but there should be a significant increase by the end of the year, bearing in mind that it has a cheaper acquisition cost and is completely safe.

Biogas (CNG) and its advantages for consumers

Wallace Reis, an owner of six gas stations in Rio de Janeiro, says he started offering biogas about a year ago because of its high efficiency. He claims that many customers do not even realize that they are fueling with biogas, as it is a process similar to CNG. He claims that customers always come back after noticing the results on their vehicles.

Another great benefit of biogas is its greater safety. Because it is lighter than air, if it leaks, the gas is easily dissipated, which reduces the risk of explosions or fires. While gasoline ignites at 300ºC and alcohol at 200ºC, biogas ignites at a temperature greater than 620ºC.
