Officially Beginning the Privatization of Eletrobras, the MME and the Ministry of Economy Met with Sector Representatives at the Brazilian Stock Exchange (B3), but Were Criticized by Protesters Who Alleged Irregularities in the Privatization Project.

On the afternoon of last Tuesday (06/14), President Jair Bolsonaro and the ministers of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and the Ministry of Economy met at the Brazilian Stock Exchange, B3, located in São Paulo, to officially announce the privatization of Eletrobras. However, the ceremony was met with strong protests outside the venue, alleging a number of irregularities in the concession model.

Event at the Brazilian Stock Exchange with Representatives from the MME, the Ministry of Economy, and President Jair Bolsonaro Marks the Official Start of Eletrobras Privatization

Republic President Jair Bolsonaro and the ministers of Economy, Paulo Guedes, and Mines and Energy, Adolfo Sachsida, attended the ceremony to officially announce the privatization of Eletrobras at B3 this Tuesday. Additionally, the president of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Gustavo Montezano, and several former federal government ministers were present to mobilize the national government for the new privatization project of the company.

The event was held to officially mark the beginning of the processes for the company’s concession to the private sector, and the president of Eletrobras, Rodrigo Limp Nascimento, stressed that he has no doubts about the need for privatization and the benefits to come for the company.

Although President Jair Bolsonaro was present at B3 for the ceremony, he did not make any speeches or statements regarding the company’s concession model. The president of the MME took the opportunity to highlight that Brazil is now entering a new phase in privatization projects.

Additionally, alongside the president of Eletrobras and the MME minister, Paulo Guedes from the Ministry of Economy also made a statement, saying that the privatization of the company brings the feeling of a child leaving their parents’ house.

The executive further stated that this is the moment for the world to witness the largest clean and renewable energy company being free for the private market. Thus, the event concluded with strong prospects for accelerating the process by the MME and the Ministry of Economy.

Unions and the Public Hold Protests Against Privatization During Event Held by the MME and the Ministry of Economy at B3

Although the privatization ceremony of Eletrobras at B3 seemed calm at first, outside the venue, various unions and representatives from the energy sector expressed their opposition to the company’s privatization.

The main argument against the MME, the Ministry of Economy, and President Jair Bolsonaro is that the government is handing over the largest clean and renewable energy company to the private market without considering the consequences of the decision.

Thus, Fabíola Latino, coordinator of the National Collective of Electricity Workers (CNE), protested: “The privatization of Eletrobras will raise our electricity bills. And it’s not just the electricity bill we pay at home. Eletrobras is the largest generation and transmission company in Latin America; it is the beginning of Brazil’s production chain. The increase will impact the industrial production chain and will undermine the little development we are experiencing today.”

In addition to the CNE, present at the protest against Eletrobras’ privatization were the executive director of the Bank Workers’ Union, Chico Pugliesi, Guilherme Boulos from PSOL, and several representatives from MTST (Homeless Workers’ Movement), as well as a large number of civilians participating in the act.
