Natural Gas Corridors Boost Economy And Sustainability In Minas, With Savings Of 34% On Ethanol, 35% On Gasoline And 15% On Diesel, Improving Air Quality.

The Natural Gas Corridors are essential for driving economic growth in Minas Gerais, providing a 34% savings compared to Ethanol, 35% savings on Gasoline, and 15% savings on Diesel. Additionally, this technology significantly contributes to improving air quality in the region, establishing itself as a sustainable and economical alternative for transportation.

By adopting natural gas, it not only encourages a more conscious consumption but also serves as an important vector for development. The Natural Gas Vehicle is a crucial tool in the decarbonization of heavy fleets, promoting more autonomy and sustainability. For these reasons, the use of Natural Gas is essential for the energy transition, benefiting both the environment and the local and national economy.

Competitiveness Of Natural Gas In July 2024

Natural gas became even more attractive in July 2024, generating a 34% savings in cost per kilometer driven compared to Ethanol, 35% compared to Gasoline (in light vehicles), and 15% compared to Diesel (for heavy vehicles). Minas Gerais, according to data released by the Federal Government, has the largest road network in Brazil. Thus, providing Minas Gerais residents with a fuel that emits fewer pollutants and ensures more savings in cost per kilometer driven is an objective of Gasmig.

Environmental Benefits Of Natural Gas

From an environmental perspective, natural gas stands out for emitting significantly fewer pollutants compared to other fossil fuels. This directly contributes to the improvement of air quality and reduces the environmental impacts associated with the transportation of goods and passengers. The infrastructure and technology provided by Gasmig ensure that, at the natural gas fueling stations in the state, light and heavy vehicles operate with natural gas engines safely and efficiently throughout their routes. Furthermore, this technology generates a considerable reduction in pollutant emissions, with a decrease of up to 30% in CO2 emissions and 96% in particulate matter, resulting in savings for transportation companies and promoting a more sustainable future for both the state and the country.

Natural Gas Corridors In Minas Gerais

Continuous investments by the mining company have led to the creation of four natural gas corridors providing access to the other three states in the Southeast region and Bahia. These corridors include the BH-Rio Natural Gas Corridor (BR-040), Fernão Dias Natural Gas Corridor (BR-381), Vitória Natural Gas Corridor (BR-381/262), and Rio-Bahia Natural Gas Corridor (BR-116/381). The main objective is to ensure at least one natural gas fueling station every 400 km along the main highways connecting Minas Gerais to other states, reaching strategic regions. With this, Gasmig plans to establish three new natural gas fueling stations on state and federal highways by the end of 2025. Additionally, the company aims to add eight more stations by the end of 2026, as outlined in the goals of the Second Periodic Tariff Review, totaling 71 stations.

Investment In Heavy Vehicles

The use of natural gas in heavy vehicles presents itself as a promising solution for reducing operational costs and promoting sustainability in the transportation sector, contributing to a more economical and environmentally responsible future. Manufacturers are making significant investments to produce natural gas-powered trucks in the country. Industry professionals identify the Natural Gas Vehicle as the main route for road freight transport towards a low-carbon economy.

Advancement Of Natural Gas Trucks In Brazil

Natural gas trucks are a recent innovation in Brazil, despite being sold in Europe since the 1980s. This reality is changing, with expectations for a rapid expansion of the service network. According to information published in ‘O Globo’, Anfavea, the association that brings together Brazilian manufacturers, registered 145 newly licensed natural gas trucks in Brazil last year, representing 0.13% of the total. In the first half of this year, 69 heavy vehicles were licensed, while 65.1 thousand new diesel trucks were licensed in the same period.

Fuel Economy With Natural Gas

When we compare natural gas with diesel and similar fuels, we observe savings of up to 15%. Cars and trucks powered by natural gas stand out for decreasing costs per kilometer driven. Experts say that companies replacing their fleets with heavy vehicles powered by natural gas seek certifications that recognize a lower carbon footprint, thus increasing their ability to obtain differentiated credit lines.

Growth Of Natural Gas Vehicle Fleet

According to data from Denatran, as of June this year, the fleet of heavy vehicles 100% powered by natural gas in Minas has grown by 346.7% over the past five years. If we consider vehicles that use diesel/natural gas, the growth was even greater: 850% from 2019 to 2024. Light vehicles using Natural Gas as fuel also showed growth during the same period, representing an increase of about 5.7%.

Autonomy And Efficiency Of Natural Gas

Research conducted by the Company for the natural gas scenario in July 2024 reveals that by fueling R$ 100 of natural gas, it is possible to travel 391 km, considering the average consumption of light and utility vehicles, with a cost of R$ 0.26 per km. Regarding heavy vehicles, simulations indicate a yield of up to 419 km with natural gas compared to 345 km achieved with diesel.
