The Duplication of the Minérios Highway in Almirante Tamandaré Advances with a Concrete Central Lane, Paved Marginals, Bike Lanes, a Footbridge, and a New Overpass on PR 509, Reorganizing Local Access, Reducing Traffic Conflicts, Enhancing Security, and Preparing PR 092 to Operate as a Strategic Logistics Corridor for Greater Curitiba for Regional Drivers

In 2024, the delivery of the first phase of the duplication of the Minérios Highway, linking Curitiba to the urban perimeter of Almirante Tamandaré, began to reshape the flow between the capital and the Metropolitan Region. In 2025, the advancement of the second phase solidified the stretch as a mandatory axis for those who rely daily on PR 092.

Now, with a rigid concrete surface in the central lane, asphalted marginal lanes, bike lanes, and a new overpass at the intersection with the Limestone Highway, the Minérios Highway combines greater traffic capacity, organized local access, and reduced conflict points, preparing the corridor for the next expansion phases.

What the Second Phase of the Duplication of the Minérios Highway Involves

The second phase of the duplication of the Minérios Highway encompasses a segment of approximately 1.28 kilometers, between km 14.3 and km 15.6 of PR 092, in Almirante Tamandaré.

Despite its short length, the stretch concentrates decisive structural interventions for traffic behavior at the city’s entrance.

On the main axis, the work foresees a concrete central lane, with two lanes of traffic in each direction and a New Jersey-type concrete barrier separating opposing flows.

Alongside, the marginal lanes in asphalted pavement accommodate local traffic, allowing residents, businesses, and services to make direct accesses without interfering with the through traffic of the Minérios Highway.

In addition to the traffic lanes, the project includes bike lanes and sidewalks, as well as a completed footbridge for pedestrian crossing.

The combination of a dedicated central lane, marginals, and non-motorized infrastructure signals a change in standard, with the Minérios Highway moving from being merely a transit route to also functioning as a structured urban corridor.

How the New Overpass Changes the Intersection with the Limestone Highway

One of the most sensitive points on the Minérios Highway in Almirante Tamandaré is the intersection with the Limestone Highway, PR 509, where heavy vehicle traffic mixes with local traffic.

The new overpass implemented at this intersection aims to separate functions and reduce direct conflicts between those merely passing through the area and those needing to access neighborhoods and industrial areas.

The device is integrated into a system of roundabouts that distributes movements between the duplicated central lane, the marginals, and urban accesses.

As soon as the roundabouts are completed, the junction of the new concrete lane with the existing pavement will be made, allowing for the full release of traffic over the overpass and completely reorganizing how vehicles approach the Minérios Highway.

In practice, the logic becomes clear: the central lane of the Minérios Highway absorbs long-distance traffic, while the marginals concentrate returns, turns, and connections with the urban grid of Almirante Tamandaré.

This reduces risky maneuvers at grade, especially during peak hours, when trucks, cars, and public transport compete for space at the same intersection.

Impacts of the Duplication of the Minérios Highway on Road Safety

The ongoing interventions on the Minérios Highway have been designed to reduce conflict points between vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The adoption of a duplicated central lane in concrete, separated by a physical barrier, reduces the risk of head-on collisions and wrong-way driving in higher-speed sections of PR 092.

On the marginals, the goal is to lower average speed, concentrate access, and organize returns, avoiding abrupt entries and exits directly onto the continuous flow lane of the Minérios Highway.

The use of roundabouts instead of simple intersections also helps to reduce the impacts of potential collisions by imposing circular paths and lower speeds at convergence points.

The presence of bike lanes and sidewalks, along with the footbridge for pedestrians, removes foot and bike traffic from the lane, reinforcing the separation between modes of transport.

For those living or working along the Minérios Highway, this combination of elements represents less exposure to risky situations and greater predictability in daily crossing routines.

Upcoming Segments of PR 092 and the Package of 13 Overpasses

While completing the second phase, the DER of Paraná is advancing in the bidding for a new segment that should continue the duplication of the Minérios Highway towards Jardim Areias, still in Almirante Tamandaré.

This segment will be about 8.3 kilometers long, maintaining the same road standards adopted in the current phase.

The project foresees a concrete central lane with two lanes in each direction, asphalted marginals, bike lanes, and sidewalks throughout its entire length.

One of the most relevant points is the implementation of 13 new overpasses in five locations, many of them parallel, serving both directions of PR 092 and minimizing at-grade crossings.

Thus, the Minérios Highway tends to operate as a corridor with fewer lateral interferences, dedicated overpasses for crossings, and marginals to accommodate local traffic.

With each new duplicated section, drivers will have more available lanes, more segregated routes, and fewer situations where vehicles cross directly over the main lane, which impacts both safety and travel time.

Why the Minérios Highway is Strategic for Greater Curitiba

The Minérios Highway is regarded as a strategic project for connecting urban areas of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba to relevant productive hubs and logistics corridors, especially related to mining and industry.

At the same time, PR 092 serves a growing volume of daily commutes for workers, students, and service providers between neighborhoods, districts, and the capital of Paraná.

With the first phase delivered in 2024, the second phase in final paving and finishing stages, and the prospect of the new segment to Jardim Areias with 13 planned overpasses, the Minérios Highway is on track to establish itself as a structural corridor for Greater Curitiba, bringing together regional flow, metropolitan mobility, and urban access within the same road system.

For drivers, the expected result is a highway with faster journeys, fewer unexpected stops, more return options, and less exposure to dangerous crossings, effects that are expected to intensify as new sections are completed and integrated.

For the surrounding area, the duplication of the Minérios Highway also means reorganizing fronts of urban growth, accesses to neighborhoods, and interface between residential zones and industrial areas.

In your assessment, is the duplication of the Minérios Highway already helping reduce delays and risks in daily commutes across Greater Curitiba, or is there still much to be done for the corridor to function as you expect?

Se for igual ao primeiro trecho, tudo ondulado, será uma viagem de cair o queixo. Que falta de competência técnica em fazer uma rodovia lisa.
