With the Discontinuation of the Bilhete Único, Jaé Promises to Modernize Urban Mobility. Discover How the Transition Will Be and What Users Need to Know to Adapt.

End of RioCard? Mayor Eduardo Paes officially confirmed: the RioCard will be discontinued in February 2025. This decision marks a major change in public transportation in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In its place, the new ticketing system called Jaé will be implemented, which promises to modernize and make urban mobility more efficient. If you are a frequent user of municipal transportation, it’s time to stay tuned for the updates to avoid unpleasant surprises. We will explain how this transition will work and how you can prepare for the end of the Bilhete Único in its current format.

What Changes with the End of the RioCard?

The RioCard, used by thousands of Cariocas daily, will cease to operate in February 2025. According to the City Hall and the Department of Transportation, the idea is to replace the current system with a more modern and efficient model, aligned with the needs of a city in constant movement.

The replacement, known as Jaé, is already in operation but still coexists with the RioCard during the transition period. Starting in February, however, Jaé will be the only accepted means of municipal transport. This transition aims to ensure that all users adapt to the new system without interruptions in public transportation access.

What is Jaé (Replacement for RioCard) and How Does It Work?

Jaé is a fully digital ticketing system, which promises to revolutionize the way Cariocas use public transportation. Unlike the RioCard, it does not require a physical card. Instead, users can access the Bilhete Único directly through their mobile phones, generating a QR Code to validate their fare.

The adoption of Jaé is simple and intuitive, with a 100% online registration process. This eliminates the need to visit service points or face queues to issue or recharge the card. Additionally, the system is designed to reduce costs and enhance security, ensuring a more practical experience for all users.

Companies Need to Prepare for the End of the RioCard

On November 7, 2023, the City Hall of Rio issued an important alert to the companies in the city: it is essential that they register their employees in the new transportation voucher system, Jaé, as soon as possible. This measure aims to ensure that no worker has their access to the benefit interrupted during the transition phase.

The transition phase began on November 1, 2023, and will last until January 31, 2025. During this period, both RioCard and Jaé will be in operation. However, it is highly recommended that companies and workers take advantage of this interval to migrate to the new system, avoiding future disruptions.

Benefits of the New Jaé System

The replacement of RioCard by Jaé brings several benefits for users of public transportation in Rio. Check out some of them:

  • Convenience: No need for physical cards, Jaé allows access via QR Codes directly on the phone;
  • Accessibility: The system is fully digital and can be contracted online, making the process easier for users;
  • Time Savings: No queues for recharging or issuing cards, users gain more agility in their daily lives;
  • Security: Reduction in the risk of fraud, as the system is fully digital.

How to Adapt to the Change?

If you use the Bilhete Único, it’s important to start becoming familiar with Jaé as soon as possible. Here are some tips:

  1. Register in the System: Visit the official Jaé website or app and follow the instructions to create your account;
  2. Check with Your Company: If you use transportation vouchers, confirm if your company has already registered in the new system;
  3. Take Advantage of the Transition Phase: Use this period to adapt to Jaé while the RioCard is still in operation.

The Future of Public Transportation in Rio

With the introduction of Jaé, Rio de Janeiro is taking an important step towards modernizing public transportation. This transition reflects a joint effort by the City Hall and the Department of Transportation to improve urban mobility and offer more convenience to citizens.

Although the end of RioCard represents the closure of a cycle, Jaé emerges as a modern, accessible, and efficient solution to meet the demands of a city in constant evolution. If you haven’t yet familiarized yourself with the new system, don’t waste time and start preparing for this change that promises to transform transportation in Rio.

The end of RioCard announced by Eduardo Paes symbolizes a major revolution in public transportation in Rio. With the arrival of Jaé, users can expect more convenience, time savings, and modernization in their daily lives. Take advantage of the transition phase to get to know the new system and ensure that your routine continues to flow without interruptions.

Stay tuned for updates from the City Hall, the Department of Transportation, and Mayor Eduardo Paes to stay informed about the process. The future of transportation in Rio is changing, and you can’t miss out on this transformation!
