Elon Musk stated that the SpaceX Polaris Dawn mission will be a historical milestone. Understand the reasons that make this mission so special, from the first commercial spacewalk to advanced laser communication tests.

The CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk, did not hold back words while describing the Polaris Dawn mission. He said that the journey, scheduled to launch on August 26, will be “epic.” And, honestly, he has good reasons to believe so. The mission, which will take four non-professional astronauts to Earth’s orbit, promises not only to go farther than any other SpaceX flight but also to achieve unprecedented feats in space.

The Polaris Dawn mission is already drawing attention for the fact that Elon Musk and SpaceX plan to take the Crew Dragon spacecraft to an altitude of 435 miles (700 kilometers). That’s 185 miles (298 kilometers) higher than the International Space Station (ISS), which means the crew will orbit much farther than any previous Crew Dragon flight. And that’s not all that makes this mission so grand.

Elon Musk claims that there will be the first commercial spacewalk

One of the major highlights will be the first commercial spacewalk in history. Yes, two of the crew members will have the opportunity to exit the spacecraft and perform this extravehicular activity (EVA), a true milestone for private missions. And who are these brave astronauts? Commander Jared Isaacman, CEO of Shift4, and Sarah Gillis, chief space operations engineer at SpaceX. They will not only float in the vacuum of space but also test a brand new spacesuit developed specifically for these activities. The idea behind this test is clear: “Building a base on the Moon and a city on Mars will need thousands of spacesuits,” as SpaceX itself stated. In other words, what happens during this mission could shape the future of space exploration.

Lieutenant Colonel and top engineer from SpaceX will be on board

Also on board will be Scott Poteet, a retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Air Force and former colleague of Isaacman, and Anna Menon, another top engineer at SpaceX. Although three of the four crew members are going to space for the first time, Isaacman already has experience, as he participated in the Inspiration4 mission in 2021, which was also entirely civilian.

Another highlight of the Polaris Dawn will be the first manned test of Starlink laser communications in space. This is super important for the future of space missions, as these laser-based communications could be key to ensuring that advanced systems function on longer journeys, such as those to the Moon or even Mars.

Human Health in Space

The mission won’t stop there. During the journey, the crew will conduct several scientific research studies. The goal? Improve our understanding of human health in space. This data is crucial for preparing humanity for long-duration space flights, something that will be essential in future missions beyond Earth’s orbit.

For those who want to closely follow all these epic moments, SpaceX will live stream the launch and other important parts of the mission. It will be a unique opportunity to see, live, history being made, with Elon Musk and his bold vision of taking humanity beyond Earth becoming a reality.

With the Polaris Dawn mission, Elon Musk and SpaceX are once again pushing the boundaries of what is possible in space exploration. From the highest altitude ever reached by Crew Dragon to the first commercial spacewalk, every detail of this mission is being carefully planned to pave the way for the future of humanity in space. If it depends on Elon Musk, what we will see on August 26 will truly be epic!

Por que ele não vai junto nesse “feito” tão magnífico? Será que o dono de naves espaciais não tem vontade de ir ao espaço? Colocar os outros em risco é fácil, queria ver ele fazer parte da missão.
