While many see the company as an environmental savior, its latest action has triggered a wave of outrage that spanned continents. Environmentalists are at war, but the reason may surprise you. What could make a “green” company like Tesla cause such an uproar?
According to information revealed by the British newspaper The Guardian and confirmed by analyses from Kayrros, an environmental intelligence company, the construction of the Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory, Tesla’s largest factory in Europe, resulted in the clearing of approximately 500 thousand trees.

This massive deforestation occurred between March 2020 and May 2023, affecting 329 hectares of forest in the state of Brandenburg, Germany. The consequences of this act have been widely debated, especially concerning the environmental impact and the fervent reactions that have arisen since then.
Environmental Impact: A Controversial Analysis
The felling of the trees generated an immediate reaction from environmentalists and activist groups. Protests erupted across Germany, with protesters occupying trees and even setting fire to an electricity tower in March 2023, which temporarily halted production at the factory.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, harshly criticized the actions of local authorities, accusing them of being lenient with the leftist groups that organized the protests.
However, the situation goes beyond the protests. Antoine Halff, an analyst at Kayrros, explained that while deforestation is a cause for concern, it’s essential to evaluate the issue from another perspective.
Halff highlighted that replacing combustion cars with electric vehicles could yield long-term environmental benefits. According to him, the felled trees would represent about 13 thousand tons of CO₂, equivalent to the annual emissions of 2,800 combustion cars in the United States.
Expansion of the Gigafactory and Corrective Measures
Even amidst the controversies, Tesla continues its expansion. In July 2024, the Brandenburg Ministry of the Environment approved the expansion of the Gigafactory, allowing the factory’s production to double to 1 million vehicles per year.
The decision sparked new protests, but Tesla defended itself, stating that while incidents during construction raised concerns, no permanent environmental damage has been recorded. The company assured that it has implemented all necessary corrective measures to mitigate the impacts caused.
The Role of Technology in Denunciation
The complaints against Tesla would not have been possible without the advanced technology used by Kayrros. The company monitored deforestation through optical satellite images captured by Sentinel-2, with a resolution of 10 meters.
These images, automatically processed and reviewed by remote sensing specialists, revealed the magnitude of the deforestation.
The tool was developed to assist companies in complying with European Union regulations, which will prohibit the importation of products linked to deforestation starting in 2025.
A Question of Perspective: Benefit or Environmental Harm?
The controversy surrounding Tesla is complex and raises a central question: Does the immediate environmental impact justify the potential long-term benefits of transitioning to electric vehicles?
For many, the felling of the trees is too high a price to pay, especially at a critical moment for forest preservation and combating climate change. On the other hand, some argue that, in the long run, the transition to electric vehicles may offset the initial impact.
