In Positions Previously Predominantly Held By Men, Now Also Have A Greater Female Presence In Oil Refineries, Logistical Terminals Or Electricity Distributors.
Large industries, historically dominated by men, are gradually opening opportunities for women at all levels, especially in those associated with operations. They are making their way, including on the factory floor of an oil refinery, at an electricity distributor, and in a logistics terminal.
The energy company Acelen, which oversees the operations of the Mataripe Refinery, has created programs to assist in this transition. Women now represent 18% of the factory workforce after just one year under new management, which is still quite uncommon for the industry as a whole. They already make up 50% of the refinery’s lab workforce and are responsible for up to 16,000 monthly analyses.
How To Apply For Job Openings At Acelen Exclusively For Women?
The company has also launched a Young Apprentice program in Bahia, which will provide women from local communities with a free two-year Petrochemical Technician course. There are 40 spots for women in the cities of Candeias, Madre de Deus, São Francisco do Conde, Catu, and Maré, Frades, and Bom Jesus dos Passos islands. You must be between 18 and 21 years old, be a resident of one of these cities, and have completed high school to be considered for the selection process.

Can Diversity Help Improve Company Results?
If Acelen is to play a leadership role in Industry 4.0, it needs to be an inclusive company. Commitment to diversity and equality among employees strengthens the company’s results and aids the local community. In the modern world, a woman can find her place anywhere, even in the refinery. The Vice President of Human Resources, Joo Raful, commented: “They make a difference everywhere, with safety, quality, and commitment.
There are more and more women working in the technical and operational areas of the Energisa Group, an energy distribution holding company. Female workers represent 18.5% of the workforce and are increasingly occupying traditionally male positions such as distribution electricians, transmission line electricians, maintenance technicians, and team leaders.
Ultracargo’s goal is to have at least 30% of its workforce composed of women by 2025 and ideally more than 50% by 2030. Ultracargo is Brazil’s largest independent liquid bulk storage company. The corporation has undertaken a series of actions to increase the availability of female operators, focusing on professional training for women in communities near the terminals.
In January 2023, Ultracargo graduated 25 students from the second edition of the Operator Training Course, with more than half being women. Candidates from Bahia living in cities adjacent to the Port of Aratu were invited to apply for the course. It was proposed that half of the available spots be reserved for female students so that, upon completion of the program, women would be competitive candidates for jobs at Ultracargo and other companies in the Camaçari and Port of Aratu area. Over three months, they studied chemistry, mathematics, physics, administration, and fluid definition and mechanics.
The first course was held in Barcarena, Pará, where the company operates the Vila do Conde Terminal (opened in December 2021). Because of this training program, which reserved half of the spots for women, the VDC Terminal now achieves a rate of 30% female employees in operational positions; the company expects to reach this standard at all its facilities. The diversification of the workforce at the terminal has yielded positive results, especially in areas of efficiency and safety.
