Shell Oil Company Has Formed A New Partnership For Fuel Supply Worldwide With Maritime Transport Company CMA CGM, Which Is Now Seeking The Decarbonization Of Its Ships Using Natural Gas As Fuel.

This Thursday, (06/30), the French maritime transport company CMA CGM is investing in the sustainability of its cargo movement operations and has signed a contract with Shell to purchase natural gas from the oil company. Thus, the fuel will be used in the transport company’s fleet of ships as a way to promote the decarbonization of the maritime sector and contribute to minimizing the environmental impacts caused by these activities.

Shell And CMA CGM Sign Contract For Supply Of Natural Gas That Will Serve As Fuel For The French Company’s Ship Decarbonization Project

Throughout the past week, Shell Oil Company and the French CMA CGM have finalized negotiations for a new agreement and signed a contract for the purchase and sale of liquefied natural gas. The product will be used in the new acceleration plan for the company’s decarbonization project over the coming years, serving as fuel for ships that transport goods at international ports.

In this way, the contract with CMA CGM stipulates that Shell will supply liquefied natural gas over several years for the fueling of CMA CGM’s 13,000 TEU ships at the Port of Singapore, starting in the second half of 2023. And, to ensure that this operation runs smoothly, the natural gas supply will be carried out by FueLNG, a joint venture between a Shell unit in Singapore and Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd, in order to bring management closer to the supply scenario.

Additionally, Shell announced that for the supply of natural gas to CMA CGM’s ships in the company’s decarbonization plan, the vessel “FueLNG Bellina,” which is already in operation, will be used. Furthermore, the oil company will utilize an 18,000 m³ LNG supply vessel that will enter service in 2023, to make the fuel transport chain even more efficient. Thus, CMA CGM will be able to take new directions in pursuit of its decarbonization plan to neutralize pollutant emissions.

CMA CGM Sees Natural Gas As The Future Of Fueling Its Ships And Aims To Maximize The Benefits Of The Contract With Shell For The Decarbonization Plan

The use of natural gas as an alternative and clean fuel source in the transport sector is the major bet of the international market for the future of decarbonization. This is because the product can be produced entirely renewably and still ensures strong efficiency for large ships and various other cargo movement vehicles.

Thus, Tahir Faruqui, General Manager and Head of Downstream LNG at Shell, commented on the relevance of the contract with the French company for the sector and said, “By using LNG as maritime fuel, the industry immediately sets itself on a path to decarbonization. LNG is a transitional fuel and provides a reliable pathway to liquefied biomethane and liquefied e-methane from hydrogen-based fuels; both having the potential to be net zero.”
